Position: Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher

Location: Burr Ridge Middle School
Supervisor: Building Principal

Qualifications

  • State of Illinois fingerprinting and background check in compliance with state code and district policy requirements. A fingerprint-based criminal history records check and a check of the Statewide Sex Offender Database and Violent Offender Against Youth Database (when available) will be performed on the successful candidate as required by State law. Each newly hired employee must complete an Immigration and Naturalization Service Form as required by federal law.
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate Middle Grades English Language Arts endorsement.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts and evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Experience teaching middle school students preferred.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, literacy interventions, formative assessment, and data-driven instruction.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to integrate instructional technology to enhance teaching and learning.

Position Overview

The Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher provides high-quality instruction that develops students' reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, and critical thinking skills. The teacher creates a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that challenges students academically while fostering a lifelong appreciation for literacy.

The Middle School ELA Teacher collaborates with colleagues, families, and district staff to deliver standards-based instruction, monitor student progress, and implement interventions that support academic growth and achievement.

Performance Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Learning

  • Plans and delivers rigorous, standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction that promotes student achievement.
  • Develops engaging lessons that strengthen reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies, technology, and research-based practices to increase student engagement and achievement.
  • Creates and maintains a positive, safe, and respectful classroom environment that supports learning.
  • Integrates reading and writing across multiple genres and content areas.

Assessment & Data

  • Develops and administers formative and summative assessments to monitor student learning.
  • Analyzes assessment data to inform instruction and provide timely interventions.
  • Maintains accurate student records, grades, and progress reports in accordance with district expectations.
  • Communicates student progress regularly with students, parents, and guardians.
  • Participates in district assessment initiatives and data review processes.

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with grade-level teams, instructional coaches, special education staff, and administrators to improve student outcomes.
  • Participates in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), curriculum development, and district professional development.
  • Implements accommodations and modifications for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 Plans, and English Learner services.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, families, and staff regarding academic progress and classroom expectations.
  • Supports school-wide initiatives that promote literacy, student engagement, attendance, and positive school culture.

Professional Expectations

  • Supports the mission, vision, and goals of Burr Ridge CCSD 180.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding students, staff, and district operations.
  • Demonstrates professionalism through effective communication, collaboration, punctuality, attendance, and ethical conduct.
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary and benefits shall be in accordance with the CCSD 180 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Working Conditions

  • Position located at Burr Ridge Middle School.
  • Regular interaction with middle school students in classroom and school settings.
  • Participation in school activities, conferences, professional development, and district initiatives as required.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal in accordance with district evaluation procedures, the Illinois Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA), and Board policy.
