The Senior Project Engineer plays a key role in managing the financial health of construction projects. This position is responsible for supporting the Construction Manager with budget tracking, cost forecasting, change order management, and subcontractor cost control. The role bridges preconstruction pricing, field execution, and project accounting to ensure cost transparency, accuracy, and timely decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist the Construction Manager in establishing, tracking, and maintaining the project budget
- Monitor cost-to-complete, committed costs, and forecasted variances throughout the project
- Develop and maintain cost reports, cash flow projections, and project cost logs
- Identify cost trends, potential overruns, and savings opportunities, and communicate impacts early
- Manage the change order process from initial identification through approval and execution
- Solicit, review, and level subcontractor change order pricing
- Prepare pricing breakdowns, narratives, and backup documentation for owner change proposals
- Maintain change order logs, including pending, approved, and disputed changes
- Ensure approved changes are properly reflected in the budget, subcontract values, and forecasts
- Track subcontractor commitments, progress billings, and change orders
- Review subcontractor pay applications for accuracy, contract compliance, and approved scope
- Assist in scope validation during buyout and change negotiations
- Support the resolution of cost-related disputes or clarifications
- Coordinate with accounting and project controls teams to ensure accurate cost coding and reporting
- Assist with contingency tracking and usage justification
- Work closely with the field team to understand scope impacts, schedule changes, and constructability considerations affecting cost

Experience/Education
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Engineering, or related field
- 8–10 years of experience in construction project engineering or project controls on large, complex projects (e.g., healthcare, mission-critical, industrial, higher education)
- Strong understanding of construction cost accounting, budgets, and change management
- Experience working for a general contractor on commercial or industrial projects
- Proficiency with project management and cost control software
- Advanced skills in Excel for cost tracking and analysis
