Network and Systems Technician

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Network and Systems Technician to join our IT team. In this role, you'll play a key part in managing and maintaining our network & systems infrastructure, ensuring system reliability, and providing technical support across departments. Civil Service Description:

Classification: Competitive

The incumbent has the responsibility for the identification and correction of network and system problems. The incumbent performs duties during normal business hours or during the night and weekends as required. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-ranking professional. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Software & Systems Testing: Assists in the testing of new operating systems and software titles for interoperability and functionality with existing systems and software and performs maintenance and patching as appropriate;

• Infrastructure Installation: Installs and configures file servers, print servers, communication servers, network switches, personal computers, and printers (network and desktop);

• Maintenance & Support: Installs and maintains personal computers and networks, including all peripheral equipment;

• Hardware Upgrades: Upgrades computers and peripheral equipment;

• Device Management: Maintenance and management of various computing devices using mobile device management platforms such as Jamf, Action1, Google Admin, etc.;

• Content Filtering: Management of internet content filtering systems such as Deledao, Hapara, etc.;

• Data Flow & Rostering: Management of rostering and data flow systems and protocols such as Clever, Classlink, SAML, Google SSO, etc.;

• Telecommunications: Management of VoIP phone systems;

• Student Information Systems: Assists with management of student informations systems;

• Technical Support: Diagnoses computer and network problems on-site or by means of help desk staff with user telephone consultations;

• Vendor Collaboration: Works with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve systems-related problems;

• Professional Development: Attends seminars and technical education classes to keep abreast of current trends in information technology;

• Additional Duties: Performs related tasks as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of modern personal computers, local and wide area networks, file servers, print servers, and communication servers; working knowledge of installation, configuration, maintenance, and management procedures relating to personal computers, local and wide area networks, peripheral equipment, network switches, and software, including operating systems; Working knowledge of mobile device management platforms, internet content filtering systems, rostering and data flow systems and protocols, and VoIP phone systems; ability to install and configure office computer systems, networks, and associated hardware; ability to test new operating systems and software for interoperability and functionality; ability to perform system maintenance and patching; ability to upgrade computers and peripheral equipment; ability to evaluate equipment configuration requirements; ability to diagnose computer system and network problems, both on-site and through remote consultation, and assist in their resolution, including working with vendors; ability to assist with the management of student information systems; ability to direct users in system and network use; ability to understand written material; ability to follow oral and written directions; commitment to keeping abreast of current trends in information technology through seminars and technical education.
