What are the responsibilities and job description for the Diesel Technician Foreman position at Burnside Truck Service?
Burnside Truck Service is looking for an experienced Heavy-Duty Diesel Technician to step into a Shop Foreman position.
We are looking for a highly experienced, hands-on technician who has the knowledge and diagnostic ability to be a technical leader of our shop.
This is not a position for someone who simply wants to manage from a desk. The right person will continue working on trucks, diagnosing difficult problems, helping technicians solve repairs, and setting the standard for quality workmanship.
If you’re the technician other technicians come to when they can’t figure something out, we want to talk to you.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Lead and mentor a team of heavy-duty diesel technicians.
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer-related problems.
- Assist technicians with difficult or unfamiliar diagnostic issues.
- Serve as the shop’s primary technical resource.
- Help assign and prioritize work based on technician experience and ability.
- Monitor jobs throughout the repair process to make sure repairs are being performed correctly and efficiently.
- Inspect completed repairs for quality and accuracy before trucks leave the shop.
- Help prevent comebacks by making sure the root cause of a problem is properly diagnosed before parts are replaced.
- Work closely with Service Advisors and Parts personnel to keep repairs moving.
- Communicate clearly with technicians, advisors and management regarding repair status, problems and additional needs.
- Maintain accurate and detailed repair orders and technician notes.
- Help establish and enforce consistent repair procedures and quality standards.
- Step in and perform hands-on repairs and diagnostics when needed.
- Promote a clean, organized and safe shop.
- Hold yourself and other technicians accountable for quality, productivity and professionalism.
TRUCKS & SYSTEMS
Our shop works on a wide variety of Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
Experience with multiple major manufacturers is highly desired, including:
- Freightliner
- Peterbilt
- Kenworth
- Volvo
- Mack
- International
- Western Star
Experience with major diesel platforms, including: Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR and Volvo/Mack powertrains is a strong advantage.
ELECTRICAL & DIAGNOSTICS
Strong electrical diagnostic ability is one of the most important qualifications for this position. The ideal candidate can confidently troubleshoot problems involving:
- Electrical systems
- Starting and charging systems
- Wiring and circuits
- Sensors and actuators
- ECM/ECU-related problems
- Communication/network faults
- Engine and transmission electronics
- ABS and brake electronics
- Aftertreatment systems
- DPF/DEF/SCR systems
- Intermittent electrical problems
- No-start and drivability concerns
You should be comfortable reading wiring diagrams, schematics and technical information and using professional heavy-duty diagnostic equipment.
Experience with OEM diagnostic systems such as Cummins INSITE, Detroit Diagnostic Link (DDDL), PACCAR DAVIE-4, and Volvo/Mack diagnostic systems is highly desirable. We also have JPro, Allison, Wabco, and ESA.
These are the main types of software commonly used in our advanced heavy-duty diagnostic roles.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
The right candidate will have:
- 5 years of professional heavy-duty diesel truck repair experience preferred
- Extensive experience working on Class 6–8 trucks
- Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills
- Experience with multiple truck manufacturers
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to diagnose the problem rather than simply replace parts
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and technical documentation
- Experience with professional diagnostic scan tools
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to teach and mentor other technicians
- Ability to make decisions and take ownership of problems
- Ability to prioritize multiple repairs
- A professional, dependable attitude
- A commitment to doing the repair correctly the first time
LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS
We’re looking for someone who leads by example.
You don’t have to be the loudest person in the shop. You need to be the person other technicians trust and respect because you know what you’re doing.
The Shop Foreman should be willing to:
- Teach without talking down to people
- Help less-experienced technicians develop their skills
- Share knowledge instead of keeping it to themselves
- Step in when a technician is stuck
- Hold people accountable when necessary
- Communicate problems before they become bigger problems
- Maintain high standards without creating unnecessary conflict
- Work as part of the team
- Lead from the shop floor
THE TYPE OF TECHNICIAN WE WANT
We’re looking for a diagnostician and problem solver — not a parts changer.
If you approach a difficult truck problem by finding the root cause, testing your theory, verifying the repair and making sure the truck is actually fixed before it leaves the shop, you’ll fit what we’re looking for.
If you’re the person other technicians call when they’re stuck on an electrical problem, intermittent fault, aftertreatment issue or difficult diagnostic — this may be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

Preferred:
- Previous Lead Technician, Shop Foreman or senior technician experience
