As a Transmission Planning Project Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing all phases of transmission planning projects, from business development through execution. You’ll also be a mentor and resource for growing talent within our team. Key responsibilities include:
Business Development
- Cultivate and grow client relationships through marketing efforts, project interactions, and strategic engagement.
- Identify and pursue new sales opportunities with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and developers.
- Lead proposal development, project scoping, budgeting, and scheduling activities.
- Set critical project objectives with clients and lead contract development and negotiations.
- Represent 1898 & Co. in client meetings, conferences, and industry forums to expand the firm’s visibility and thought leadership in distribution planning.
- Manage the full lifecycle of transmission planning projects including scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client communication.
- Lead risk assessment processes and procedures using industry best practices.
- Direct and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams of engineers and analysts.
- Communicate project status, risks, and costs to stakeholders and executive leadership.
- Ensure all project deliverables meet quality standards, technical rigor, and client expectations.
- Oversee QA/QC reviews, documentation, and reporting to ensure consistency across deliverables.
- Coordinate with internal departments and project managers to manage staffing, workload distribution, and project resources.
- Monitor project performance and proactively address risks, issues, and schedule changes to maintain successful outcomes.
- Ensure adherence to company safety policies, quality standards, and project management best practices.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to project engineers, consultants, and analysts working on distribution planning studies.
- Foster a collaborative environment focused on continuous learning, innovation, and professional development.
- Train and develop team members in transmission planning tools, modeling techniques, and client engagement best practices.
- Promote company culture and values while supporting diversity, inclusion, and team collaboration initiatives.
- Perform and lead advanced transmission planning studies, including steady-state, transient stability, short circuit, voltage analysis, and production costing.
- Apply and interpret regulatory standards (NERC, FERC, and regional policies) to ensure compliant and forward-thinking planning.
- Utilize tools like PSS®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, ETAP, and Promod to perform complex power system modeling and analysis.
- Resolve technical challenges related to transmission planning and present clear, actionable solutions to project stakeholders.
- Support cross-functional collaboration with adjacent business lines such as Distribution Planning, Power Delivery, and Grid Modernization.
- Bachelor Degree in engineering, business, computer science or related field and 5 years of relevant experience required.
- Knowledge in project management, techniques, and procedures.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Experience leading technical aspects of consulting engagements regarding power systems, transmission planning, and grid modernization.
- Experience in consulting projects, client operations, or executing program management within the critical infrastructure industry.
- Understanding of general business and financial principles.
- Experience with communicating across business segments to understand project objectives.
