The CAD Technician transforms project plans into accurate, usable data that powers Burns Dirt’s estimating process. This role prepares, quantifies, and verifies digital plan information using AGTEK and Civil 3D—helping our estimating team bid confidently, competitively, and precisely.


Core Responsibilities

Technical Execution

  • Perform AGTEK takeoffs for earthwork, utilities, and paving.
  • Clean and organize plan data in Civil 3D for accuracy and model integrity.
  • Verify all quantities against design drawings and cross-check against models.
  • Prepare clear, formatted summaries and visuals for estimators.

Documentation & Organization

  • Redline and annotate plan sheets for clarity and revisions.
  • Maintain consistent digital folder structure and naming conventions.
  • Archive project files for future reference and version control.

Coordination & Communication

  • Collaborate with estimators to define bid scope, quantities, and assumptions.
  • Communicate discrepancies, missing data, or potential risks early in the process.
  • Support team planning meetings and pre-bid reviews.

Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and refine templates, standards, and workflows for takeoffs.
  • Participate in training for software updates and new technologies.
  • Recommend process improvements to raise speed and accuracy.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience with AGTEK and AutoCAD Civil 3D (required or preferred, depending on posting).
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to organize digital data efficiently.
  • Understanding of construction drawings, grading, utilities, and paving plans.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and file management systems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with estimators and project managers.


Success in This Role Looks Like

  • Quantity takeoffs align within a < 3% variance of field quantities.
  • Estimators receive clean, complete takeoff data on time for every bid.
  • Plan sets are organized, standardized, and easy for anyone to navigate.
  • You help the pre-construction team make faster, more confident decisions.
