POSITION DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS
Position Title: Elementary Principal FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of Curriculum Days: 261
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires the following (or equivalent qualifications):
- Masters Degree in School Administration
- State of Iowa Elementary Principal certification
- Five years of educational experience
- State of Iowa Evaluator Approval
- Elementary Administration experience highly preferred
POSITION PURPOSE
To provide educational leadership and expertise for administering a quality learning environment and educational program in an effective and efficient manner. Provide continual planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of educational programming. Exercise general supervision of all related personnel, ensuring all their duties and responsibilities are performed properly.
SUPERVISION
Supervise professional teaching staff and support staff assigned to building.
PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Protect the confidential nature of information concerning the school programs, students in the programs, and other individuals involved in the programs.
- Plan, organize, direct and oversee the programs and activities of the elementary school, contributing to the overall effectiveness of district.
- Orient, direct, motivate, and evaluate professional and educational support staff; make recommendations in various personnel matters such as hiring, assignment, discipline, and termination.
- Participate as a member of the Administrative Team and contribute ideas and recommendations in developing philosophy, curriculum, teaching strategies, and short and long-term educational direction of the district.
- Maintain open lines of communication and serve as liaison between the school staff, students, parents and the community.
- Work with PTO and community organizations to enhance student opportunities.
- Provide and promote opportunities for parent and community involvement in advisory and volunteer activities.
- Establish and administer school rules and regulations and administer board policies pertaining to the welfare of students.
- Compile and analyze test data at the building level and work with staff to develop strategies to facilitate improvement; monitor programs and evaluates student progress toward instructional objectives.
- Schedule and conduct faculty meetings to facilitate effective communication and teamwork.
- Develop schedules for faculty and students and work cooperatively with other principals to schedule shared-time employees.
- Administer safety, health, and security procedures for staff and students.
- Supervise the operation and care of the building, grounds, equipment, and other district property they are assigned.
- Oversee and administer established school budget and make recommendations in the building of the budget.
- Administer conditions of employment, in cooperation with the Human Resources Department, per collective bargaining agreements, board policies, and administrative guidelines.
- Oversee the maintenance of school and student records and preparation of related reports.
- Oversee student staffing's and coordinate the delivery of special education services in the school with the Director of Special Services.
- Attend board meetings as requested to serve as a resource person to the Superintendent and Board.
- Assist with supervision of district events as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent human relations, verbal and written communications skills, including ability to make presentations. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Proven managerial skills such as planning, directing, organizing, and coordinating. Ability to relate positively with staff, parents, and students. Ability to effectively monitor, evaluate, direct, and develop subordinates. Demonstrated leadership skills and a desire to lead. Ability to establish and maintain a favorable working and learning atmosphere. Knowledge of curriculum, business procedures and state and federal statutes. Knowledge of technology as it relates to education.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORT
Continuous speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent walking, sitting, standing, and reaching. Occasional climbing, kneeling, and transporting up to 50 lbs. High degree of concentration requiring continuous and often intense mental and visual attention. Numerous irregularities, complicated and complex tasks are involved.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Occasionally exposed to dust, noise, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with work pace and pressure. Work involves irregular hours and days. Some travel required. Exposed to hazards of the road when traveling.
