Fire Watch

Position Summary

The Fire Watch is responsible for monitoring designated areas for fire hazards and ensuring immediate response in the event of a fire risk. This role is critical in maintaining a safe work environment, particularly during hot work activities such as welding, cutting, or grinding.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor work areas for potential fire hazards during and after hot work operations
• Remain alert at all times and continuously observe assigned areas
• Immediately respond to any signs of fire, smoke, or unsafe conditions
• Use fire extinguishers or other safety equipment to control small fires
• Activate fire alarms and emergency procedures when necessary
• Maintain clear access to fire exits and firefighting equipment
• Communicate hazards or incidents promptly to supervisors
• Enforce safety rules and ensure compliance with company and OSHA regulations
• Document fire watch activities and incidents as required
• Remain on duty for the required period after hot work is completed
• Have fire extinguishers available and know location of mill water or fire water hose
• Be familiar with facility and emergency and evacuation procedures
• Search and watch for fires and potential fire hazards
• Stay in area through all breaks, including lunch and 30 minutes after any hot work
• Keep area clean to decrease fire hazards
• No sitting - Be aware of and alert of work area
• Make sure hot work permit is complete and know its location
• Always wear orange vest

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
• Ability to follow safety procedures and instructions
• Basic understanding of fire prevention and safety practices
• Ability to remain attentive for extended periods of time
• Good communication skills
• Strong communication and problem-solving abilities

Other Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, or patrol for extended periods of time
• Ability to work in various weather or industrial conditions
• Ability to lift and operate fire extinguishing equipment
• Attention to detail
• Situational awareness
• Must be reliable and responsible
• Ability to make quick decisions in emergencies
• Fire Watch personnel must not leave their assigned area while on duty
• No other job duties should interfere with fire watch responsibilities
• This position is safety-critical and requires strict adherence to Fire Watch responsibilities and procedures
