Head of Commercial Structural Engineering (Non-Residential)
Multiple Locations (CA / TX / Remote Flexibility)
Starting Salary: $155,000 (commensurate with experience)
Burke Structural Engineers (BSE) is seeking a Head of Commercial Structural Engineering to lead and grow our non-residential design division. This is a leadership role responsible for driving technical excellence, managing a team of engineers, and ensuring high-quality, efficient project delivery across a national portfolio.
This position is ideal for a highly motivated structural engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership, and is ready to lead a team while upholding high standards of accountability and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as Head of the Commercial Structural Department, leading all non-residential structural design efforts
- Stamp and sign structural drawings and calculations as Engineer of Record
- Lead, manage, and hold accountable (LMA) a team of structural engineers and BIM staff
- Review structural drawings and calculations for accuracy, completeness, and code compliance
- Establish and enforce design standards, QA/QC procedures, and best practices
- Provide technical oversight on projects involving steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and post-tensioned (PT) concrete systems
- Coordinate with architects, contractors, and clients to ensure seamless project execution
- Drive project delivery timelines, budgets, and team performance
- Opportunity to participate in weekly EOS Level 10 meetings and contribute to scorecards, rocks, and issue solving
- Mentor and develop junior engineers to improve technical and professional growth
Requirements
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and Structural Engineer (SE) in California (Required)
- Minimum 8–12 years of structural design experience in commercial (non-residential) projects
- Proven experience designing with:
- Structural steel
- Reinforced concrete
- Wood
- Masonry
- Post-tensioned concrete
- Demonstrated experience in leading teams and managing engineering staff
- Strong understanding of IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, NDS, and TMS codes
- Experience serving as Engineer of Record and signing/sealing documents
- Excellent communication and coordination skills
- Ability to thrive in a high-accountability, performance-driven environment
