Bureau Veritas offers meaningful career opportunities with competitive compensation, strong benefits, and the opportunity to support communities through trusted professional services.

We partner with municipalities across the country to provide permitting, zoning, planning, code compliance, development review, inspection, and building safety services. Our work helps local governments serve residents, businesses, contractors, developers, and community stakeholders with consistency, care, and professionalism.

We are seeking a Permit Technician / Zoning Administrator / Planner to support municipal clients in the Greenville, South Carolina area. Candidates local to Greenville are encouraged to apply. Candidates based in Braselton, Georgia may also be considered, provided they are able to support Greenville-area client needs. Occasional travel to client offices, project locations, or public meetings may be required.

This role may be a good fit for someone with experience in local government, planning, zoning, permitting, community development, inspections support, customer service, administrative coordination, real estate, construction administration, or another public-facing service environment.

We know people build skills in many different ways. If you have helped people navigate detailed processes, managed records or applications, coordinated projects, supported public-facing work, or interpreted policies and procedures, we encourage you to apply.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will help support municipal planning, zoning, permitting, and development review services. You will work with residents, contractors, developers, business owners, design professionals, municipal staff, and Bureau Veritas team members to help keep applications and processes moving.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Assist applicants with permitting, zoning, planning, and development-related questions
  • Review applications for completeness, required documents, fees, signatures, and basic information
  • Route permits, plans, and applications to the appropriate reviewers or departments
  • Maintain accurate records, files, tracking logs, and digital documentation
  • Support zoning administration, including research related to permitted uses, setbacks, parking, signs, buffers, and other ordinance requirements
  • Assist with planning and development applications such as rezonings, variances, special exceptions, conditional uses, site plans, subdivision plats, annexations, and text amendments
  • Help prepare staff reports, public notices, agenda packets, correspondence, meeting materials, and case files
  • Track deadlines, review comments, resubmittals, hearing dates, approvals, conditions, and follow-up items
  • Support public hearing and board or commission processes as needed
  • Help applicants understand requirements, timelines, review comments, and next steps
  • Coordinate with planning, building, code enforcement, engineering, fire, utilities, public works, and other departments
  • Provide professional, respectful customer service in person, by phone, and electronically

This position combines public service, organization, communication, and planning support. Some days may be focused on helping applicants. Other days may involve records, research, staff reports, plan review coordination, or public meeting preparation.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in an administrative, customer service, planning, permitting, zoning, construction, development, public service, or local government-related role
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to provide respectful and professional service to residents, applicants, contractors, developers, business owners, and municipal staff
  • Strong organization and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, records, and questions
  • Comfort using computers, email, Microsoft Office, databases, digital records, or online portals
  • Willingness to learn and apply local codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, and application requirements
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a team
  • Commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, follow-through, and public service

Helpful, But Not Required

The following experience is helpful, but you do not need to have all of it to be considered:

  • Experience with municipal permitting, zoning, planning, community development, inspections, or development review
  • Familiarity with rezonings, variances, special exceptions, conditional uses, annexations, site plans, plats, public notices, or public hearings
  • Ability to read or learn to read basic site plans, plats, surveys, zoning maps, permit applications, or development documents
  • Experience preparing staff reports, agenda packets, meeting minutes, public notices, letters, or case files
  • Familiarity with South Carolina municipal planning and zoning practices
  • Experience with GIS, permitting software, Bluebeam, EnerGov, OpenGov, CityView, iWorQ, Municode, ArcGIS, or similar systems
  • Planning, zoning, permitting, code administration, or local government certifications

Equivalent combinations of education, training, certification, and relevant experience will be considered.

You May Thrive In This Role If You

  • enjoy helping people understand processes
  • communicate clearly and patiently
  • are organized and dependable
  • like work that combines people, policy, records, and problem-solving
  • can manage details without losing sight of the person in front of you
  • are comfortable asking questions and learning new systems
  • value accuracy, fairness, consistency, and public trust
  • want your work to support how communities grow and serve residents

You do not need to have followed a traditional career path to be considered. We welcome candidates with transferable experience, curiosity, and a strong interest in public service, planning, zoning, permitting, and community development.

Work Location

This position will support municipal clients in the Greenville, South Carolina area. Candidates local to Greenville are encouraged to apply.

Candidates based in Braselton, Georgia may also be considered, provided they are able to support Greenville-area client needs. Occasional travel to client offices, project locations, or public meetings may be required based on client needs.
