Qualifications:

Have a bachelors degree in Mining Engineering that included curriculum accredited by ABET; OR include differential & integral calculus AND courses in five of the following areas of engineering science or physics: (1) statics/dynamics; (2) strength of materials; (3) fluid mechanics/hydraulics; (4) thermodynamics; (5) electrical fields/circuits; (6) nature & properties of materials; OR (7) optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics or electronics; OR have a combination of education & experience including engineering coursework in physical & mathematical science & experience in one of the branches of engineering AND I have 1 of the following: (1) professional engineer registration; (2) passed the EIT examination or similar state examination; (3) completed 60 semester hours of coursework specified in the basic requirement above; (4) completed a bachelors degree in a related field AND have 1 year or more of professional engineering experience.
In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performing work in solid minerals exploration, development & production such as prepare or analyze exploration plans, the extraction of minerals in conformance to lease terms & conditions, or mine plans; determine mineral reserves, inspect mining operations & reclamation activities.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: Although most of the work is in the office, periodic field inspections of exploration and mining projects will be required. Fieldwork requirements may include long periods of driving, riding over rough roads and trails, walking or hiking over mountainous and/or rough terrain, possibly some horseback or off- road vehicle riding. Travel in all kinds of weather will be required.
Under emergency situations, the incumbent must be prepared to investigate an exploration or mine site regardless of the weather, time of day, or terrain.
Work Environment: ??????? Most of the work is performed in an office setting. However, some field work is required in order to conduct inspections of exploration and mining projects. The outdoor environment can range from below freezing temperatures to over 90 degrees F, and from snow or rain to very dry. Fieldwork can involve rocky, steep terrain or underground mines that are dark, wet, cold in the
winter, and dangerous. Incumbent may occasionally occupy field station quarters with a minimum of comforts for a period of up to one week. The wear of protective safety equipment (i.e., hard hat, steel-toed shoes and safety glasses} is mandatory during mine inspections. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed by the mine operator, Mine Safety and Health Administration, manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
