What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vehicle Mechanic I (2026-2027) - Transportation position at Bullitt County Schools?
This position is for the 2026-2027 school year.
Perform mechanical repair work, including preventative maintenance on school buses, trucks and other gas and diesel powered automotive equipment, and other repairs as assigned.
Duties will include:
1. Inspect all busses.
2. Make inspection of any reports coming from drivers indicating something potentially wrong with the bus.
3. Makes service calls to driver's homes, when necessary, to start bus.
4. Maintain cleanliness of the shop area.
5. Perform repair work on buses.
6. Punctual and regular in attendance.
7. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Position Details
Hours: 8 hours per day (plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch)
Contract Length: 261 days per year
Contract Adjustments: Contracted days will be prorated based on the start date
Employment Status: Full-time with benefits
Employment Type: 12-month employee on the classified pay schedule
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Kentucky CDL or willing to obtain CDL within about 90 days
- 1 year experience in general automotive repair.
- Documentation: Candidates must provide proof of educational requirements to HR upon recommendation for hire.
2026-2027 Pay Scale
- Starting Pay (Step 0): $21.93
- Experienced Pay (Step 10): $26.11

- The hired applicant is responsible for submitting the BCPS Verification of Experience Form to prior employers for completion and return to HR.
Payroll Note: While this is an hourly position, the salary is distributed via a year-long contract over 10 months. You will receive 4 paychecks at the end of June.
