TIME COMMITMENT: Full-time

STARTING SALARY: $65,000.00

ORGANIZATION

The mission of BOSS is to help homeless, poor, and disabled people achieve health and self-sufficiency, and to fight against the root causes of poverty and homelessness. The organization was founded in 1971 by a group of volunteers from the Hillel Streetwork Project in Berkeley who responded to the needs of mentally ill individuals being released to the streets by state hospital closures. Today, BOSS develops solutions to mass homelessness, mass incarceration and community violence and is dedicated to the inclusion of people marginalized by addiction, trauma, criminality, incarceration, poverty, racism, sexism, homelessness and violence with an intentional focus on four areas of service with Housing Security, Criminal Justice Reentry, Neighborhood Safety, and Social Justice Programs and services. BOSS works one-on-one with each family and each individual to help them achieve stable income, permanent affordable housing, and lasting wellness.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Administrative Manager and as part of a case management team, the Intake Coordinator provides intake services for paroled, probation, or incarcerated individuals; provides recordkeeping, instructional assistance, and interaction and communication with clients, staff, parole agents, probation officers, and other agencies. In alignment with our public health strategy for this initiative, the Intake Coordinator works with clients that are in need of the services necessary to successfully transition back into the community from incarceration. These services include, but are not limited to, education, job readiness, job placement, substance abuse education, and life skills. The Intake Coordinator helps in creating opportunities and access to direct engagement to increase and maintain the number of participants from marginalized Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities active and enrolled in our programs. This role works onsite, as part of BOSS Centers of Excellence: Trauma Informed Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative.

Essential Functions (Key Duties and Responsibilities):

Program Support

Provides one-on-one and group instruction in re-entry program areas; assists clients with self-help, job readiness, accessing community resources and services and social and coping skills; assists clients in extra-curricular activities; supervises clients in class setting as directed by manager; assists clients in using computers; models appropriate behavior for clients; motivates clients by ensuring a positive and safe environment and maintaining site morale; reinforces appropriate behavior modifications for clients; adapts materials and equipment to meet specific needs and learning styles of the client; evaluates client progress on work assignments and shares with manager; develops and uses predetermined daily and weekly workshops/work plans and follow-through; operates standard office and classroom equipment; provides first aid/cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed when properly certified; maintains awareness of physical and emotional changes in clients and reports concerns to staff and manager; plans and implements special events; attends in-services and staff meetings as required.

  • Routinely engage and interact with potential program participants.
  • Work to engage Individuals eligible for services. Work directly with Individuals upon jail/prison release and follow them through their transition back into the community to ensure linkage relevant services for their recovery.
  • Support the jail/prison transition team with release planning to include the following:
  • Identify Individual-perceived barriers to discharge, assist the Individual with working through barriers and assure the Individual that they will be supported throughout the process.
  • Helping the Individual complete any necessary paperwork for receiving Behavioral Health services.
  • Supporting the Individual’s self-advocacy in the development of their own community treatment plan and treatment activities.
  • Interacting with potential participants.
  • Developing a trusting relationship with participants.
  • Promoting a sense of self-direction and self-advocacy.
  • Helping motivate through sharing the strengths and challenges of their own recovery.
  • Considering the Individual’s medical issues and helping them develop wellness plans they can pursue in accordance with their physician recommendations.
  • Helping the Individual plan how they will successfully manage their life in the community.
  • Educating Individuals about resources in their home community.
  • When requested by the Individual join in treatment team meetings if there are no safety concerns. Help to convey the Individual’s perspectives and assist the Individual with understanding the process.
  • Work to connect the Individual with natural support resources and the local recovery community and attend meetings as allowed.
  • Support the Individual in developing skills to facilitate trust-based relationships, develop strategies for maintaining wellness and develop skills to support relationships.
  • Assist the Individual in developing a life structure, including skills for daily living such as visits to coffee shops, use of local transportation, opening a bank account, work effectively with a payee if needed, understand benefits, budget planning, shopping and meal preparation, access leisure activities, find a church or faith home, attain, and maintain housing, etc.
  • Support the Individual in developing skills to schedule, track and attend appointments with providers.
  • Assist the Individual develop skills for self-advocacy so that the Individual can better define his or her treatment plan and communicate clearly with professionals such as psychiatric prescribers, primary care doctors, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Team Participation

  • Participates in staff meetings and other group activities essential for operations
  • Leads team discussions on participant progress and lack of progress, and helps to develop possible solutions to ensure best support for the participant’s success.
  • Promotes good community relations and utilizes community services and resources.
  • Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by BOSS and by regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Assumes on-call responsibility, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO:

Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with participants, staff and industry partners; interpret policies, procedures, techniques, and rules governing employment and job placement; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population; represent BOSS by giving presentations and participating in meetings with individuals and groups; communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; work independently with minimum supervision; monitor, track and compile statistical information; give and follow written and oral instructions.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Local economic and labor market conditions and trends; effective techniques for contacting potential employers; job development and job placement techniques, accepted standard employment practices; community resources and professional organizations; City, State, and Federal laws, regulations, and codes related to employment and Equal Employment Opportunity; modern office methods; emerging technologies and standard office productivity software; understanding laws and regulations governing state and federally funded programs including labor laws, budgets, and revenue control.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates/incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications as detailed below, or file for equivalency. Equivalency decisions are made on the basis of a combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Human Services or related field; and a minimum 1 year case management experience or related professional licensure or certification i.e.; LCSW, MFT, CADAC, LVN, LPT, etc.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience with homeless, vulnerable and/or diverse population and the knowledge surrounding poverty and social factors involved;

Ability to understand the needs of formerly homeless people with disabilities and to develop collaborative goals towards greater self-sufficiency and independence in the greater community.

Other expectations:

  • Access to a reliable vehicle, insurance, current CA driver’s license & good driving record.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, memos, business correspondence and all other mental health related documents. Ability to write clear, concise and accurate correspondence. Effective oral and written communication skills.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

College level mathematical skills required.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Demonstrated skill with problem solving techniques.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, move up and down stairways, talk and hear, drive to and from community appointments. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

This position requires the individual to work with minimal supervision. Guidance is available as necessary, however, the individual is expected to be able to function autonomously and make individual decisions when appropriate. Position does require ability to interact with a variety of individuals and the ability to meet deadlines and time pressure based on the volume of work.
