Responsibilities
- Supervise daily yard activities, including inbound and outbound shipments, ensuring timely and accurate processing of building materials.
- Manage inventory control through effective stock rotation, cycle counts, and utilization of warehouse management systems such as AS400 or similar platforms.
- Lead and motivate a team of warehouse staff, providing training on forklift operation, materials handling, and safety protocols aligned with OSHA standards.
- Coordinate logistics for shipping & receiving, ensuring compliance with 3PL (third-party logistics) providers and internal procedures.
- Implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency, reduce errors, and optimize warehouse distribution workflows.
- Oversee the safe operation of forklifts and other mechanical equipment while maintaining compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Conduct regular safety audits, enforce safety policies, and promote a culture of safety awareness among team members.
Directs the activities of yard personnel in order to ensure good customer service and safe and efficient movement of goods and equipment on the premises.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages yard staff and directs workers in loading, unloading and movement of materials on the premises utilizing material handling equipment and machinery; oversees receiving of yard materials and instructs yard workers in receiving and storage procedures.
- Ensures that employees receive proper training and certification, if necessary, to operate equipment and machinery used in yard; ensures that equipment is serviced on schedule and maintained effectively.
- Inspects loading operations for outgoing delivery to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits and safety regulations; prepares and reconciles bills of lading and packing slips.
- Provides on-the-job training to outside or new yard employees including product knowledge of items stored in yard and warehouse; housekeeping and safety procedures.
- On occasion, will perform the same duties as other yard personnel.
- Ensures that outside areas kept neat and clean and scraps and yard debris are appropriately recycled or disposed; reports safety hazards and handles remedial action.
- Assists customers in loading and load building; provides delivery status information, inventory availability and answers related questions.
- Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices in order to prevent injury to self or co-workers; attends periodic safety meetings as required; may recommend changes to improve safety procedures.
- Leads and directs employees including assigning, monitoring and reviewing work progress and accuracy, providing guidance, addressing escalated issues and training less experienced team members. May provide input on the performance of assigned employees to management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and five (5) years yard operations experience; or equivalent education and experience.
COMPETENCIES
- Advanced knowledge of yard and product activities on location including component or materials weights and methods of loading
- Advanced knowledge of operation and handling of all machinery and equipment used in the yard; maintains certification to operate such if required.
- Ability to plan and coordinate work processes to maintain and increase manpower and equipment efficiency
- Communication skills sufficient to speak before teams and work groups to explain work rules, product standards and productivity goals
- Ability to read and write work schedules and reports
- Knowledge of basic math, counting and estimating
- Customer service orientation
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

- Work is performed primarily in an outdoor yard environment, subject to variations in temperature and weather, equipment noise and dust.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and on occasion up to 80 pounds.
