TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum educational requirements subject to change based on licensing requirements)

Must have NYS teaching Certification

SUMMARY

Teachers are expected to support and exhibit a commitment to the Center’s mission and belief statements. Teachers are to develop and implement a balanced, developmentally appropriate curriculum which meets the physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs of children and encourages children’s creativity and curiosity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES

Enrollment and work needs change day to day and from semester to semester. In order to maintain OCFS New York State licensing ratios and be cost efficient, staff may be reassigned to different classrooms or age groups as needed and may be required to work varying hours.

In addition, ALL employees must be able to:

  • Observe, hear, see, anticipate and respond to children’s needs, conflicts and emergencies that may occur in a classroom, on the playground, in the gymnasium, in the bathrooms, in the hallways and on field trips
  • Determine social, physical, cognitive and emotional needs of children and communicate these in writing and verbally in a professional manner that families and other staff are able to understand and respond to
  • Address/Intervene immediately any and all situations that are potentially hurtful or harmful to a child and/or employee regardless of your job title
  • Handle the stress, tension and exasperation, with a calm demeanor, that can from dealing with many young children and their families in order to provide an even-tempered customer service
  • Lift up to 30 lbs. without any lifting restrictions
  • Safely carry Infants and older children as needed
  • Get on the floor with children to play and be able to get up and down repeatedly in order to attend to the needs of the children
  • Perform all work in accordance with Bugbee Children’s Center’s Policies/Procedures, NYS OCFS Day Care licensing regulations, governmental laws and state mandates

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES (Child Interactions/Teaching Skills/Curriculum)

Provide competent supervision, including awareness of and responsibility for the ongoing activity of each child in your care. All children must be in the range of vision and be near enough to respond with redirection or intervention strategies when needed.

Assist children in their personal care needs, e.g. diapering, toileting, feeding, washing, clothing, comforting, preparing for rest.

Manage a safe, healthy, nurturing and orderly environment conducive to optimal growth and development of children. Assures that classroom and playground are used and stored appropriately and assures that such equipment is safe and in good repair.

Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly classroom, with well-equipped learning centers to promote independent, creative, hands on play and exploration

Supervise, direct and coach all classroom employees / work study / interns / participants

Follow the cleaning guidelines/schedule for the classroom including maintaining a clean diaper and bathroom area

Create and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum and prepare materials required to implement daily plans

Become familiar with each child’s background and keep updated with new information as it becomes available

Establish a trusting relationship with the children in order to foster their developing autonomy, cooperation, and self-regulation

Actively engage children in inquiry and play based learning, problem solving and conflict resolution, hands-on activities and outdoor play

Observe and record the development of children in the group throughout the year

Complete written assessments throughout the year, which outlines each child’s developmental progress to be shared at the annual parent conference and upon request

Determine and implement procedures for the classroom in cooperation with other staff. Set up and acceptable and consistent course of discipline for children in line with Center philosophy. Enforces discipline fairly and lovingly.

Communicate effectively with the classroom staff on a daily basis about curriculum, policy enforcement, children, families etc. Give feedback to staff on an ongoing basis and alternative actions for a smooth, running classroom. Handles concerns of individual staff members.

Meet with each child’s parents/guardians in an annual formal conference to review the written assessment and write a summary regarding the conference (or more frequently as needed)

Assists in the orientation of all new employees / work study / interns / participants / volunteers

Know, understand and implement all Bugbee Children’s Center Personnel and Program policies/procedures and OCFS Regulations, including, but not limited to, those pertinent to the daily activities of the classroom and interactions with children

FAMILY INTERACTIONS

Establish and nurture a relationship between home and the Bugbee Children’s Center, which is responsive, respectful and reciprocal, and which clearly acknowledges that parents/guardians child’s first teacher and the most important influence in their child’s life. This relationship should include:

Communicating with parents/guardians on a regular basis on educational, developmental and parenting issues. Good communication will include:

  • Greeting parents/guardians and child at drop-off and pick-up times
  • Making contact through written communication as needed
  • Holding conferences as needed/requested
  • Encourage family involvement in classroom activities, meals, field trips and other activities
  • Keep families informed about classroom activities, projects and special events, through verbal interactions, family information boards and individual daily sheets

RECORD KEEPING

Keep attendance records on a daily basis

Track daily meal counts (breakfast, lunch and snack) and models family style dining during breakfast, lunch and snack according to CACFP and USDA regulations

Help maintain facility in a satisfactory condition by completing daily health and safety checklists in the classrooms and playgrounds

Take inventory of classroom equipment and supplies as requested

PROFESSIONALISM

Assign classroom duties and responsibilities to floaters/teacher assistants and other adults who are working with the children.

Work cooperatively with Supervisor, other teachers, floaters, teacher assistants, support staff, student participants and volunteers as a member of a team working together for the well being of the children and the center.

Supervise, train and support teacher assistants, student participants and volunteers in gaining theoretical and hands-on knowledge of child development and techniques of early care and education.

Communicate with college faculty pertaining to the work of student participants and provide written evaluations as required

Participate in staff meetings on a regular basis

Continue professional development through required trainings and in-service sessions and engage in other professional development activities such as: attending and presenting at conferences, offering professional development sessions, enrolling in course work and reading professional journals

Respond to unanticipated necessary temporary shift and duty changes in a professional manner understanding that flexibility is often required to meet the needs of children

Perform other duties as required by Supervisor
