What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at Buffalo Museum of Science?
Summary of Position:
Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Facilities; this position is responsible for the timely, scheduled, or as needed, general cleaning duties of all properties operated by the Society. Job duties pertain to public and non-public spaces. This position works closely with all other departments to provide appropriate setups for programs, meetings, special events, building rentals, and other functions at the Society. All job duties are performed in accordance with standard safety principles and practices.
Essential Responsibilities:
· Support the day-to-day operations of the organization.
· Follows and completes the Society’s daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedule.
· Maintains inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.
· Responsible for the safety and cleanliness of hallways, steps, galleries, restrooms, breakrooms, and other workspaces.
· Clean floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and/or vacuuming, in public and non-public spaces.
· Gather, empty, and clean trash containers.
· Service, clean, sanitize, and resupply restrooms (refills dispensers, paper products, and soaps).
· Clean windows, glass partitions, mirrors, and other surfaces, using appropriate methods.
· Dusts, wipes, washes, and sanitizes surfaces as specified.
· Set up, arrange, and remove tables, chairs, prepares facilities for and after events, exhibition openings, private events, meetings, facility rentals and education programs.
· Assist with maintaining Society’s grounds and walkways, including snow removal, raking of leaves, and picking up debris (includes using ice melting products).
· Perform duties as assigned by the Facilities Director and/or Facilities Technician.
Education, Experience, Skills, and Qualities Required:
· High school graduate or equivalent, preferred.
· 1-year experience as a custodian, janitor, or building technician.
· Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office suite), preferred.
· Able to works professionally with coworkers, contractors, and vendors.
· Able to verbally communicate and understand directions.
Physical and Other Demands:
· Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, knell; able bodied.
· Able to lift and move items of various weights and sizes (approx. 50 lbs.).
· Able to walk and climb stairs, indoors and outdoors.
· Operate the following equipment: vacuum, mop, broom, scrubber, dollies, carts, ladders, shovels, cell phone, computer, etc.
· Reading printed material and computer screens regularly (instructions, manuals, ingredients).
· Hearing and talking with people in person and on the telephone regularly.
· Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.
· Maintains a valid NYS driver’s license, prefered not required.
· Able to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
