Job Summary
The Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) Horticulturist coordinates the maintenance and enhancement of high-profile areas along Buffalo Bayou, including the 160-acre Buffalo Bayou Park and downtown green spaces. While these spaces feature diverse landscapes such as lawns, woodlands, prairies, and wildflower meadows, the Horticulturist focuses primarily on preserving design integrity and maintenance of numerous perennial gardens. Reporting directly to the Buffalo Bayou Park Director, the Horticulturist oversees a small staff and works cooperatively with BBP’s Conservation Manager, Volunteer Manager, and Zone Supervisors.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Care for and maintain the health and aesthetic of plant beds in accordance with park standards.
- Perform daily tasks including planting, transplanting, pruning, mulching, and weeding.
- Maintain plant records to ensure adherence to garden design intent.
- Oversee a small team and assist with supervision of volunteers during planting and maintenance activities.
- Implement pest management and monitor plant health.
- Prepare soil and apply amendments.
- Coordinate seasonal planting for color and visual interest.
- Monitor soil moisture and irrigation systems daily, repair minor leaks, and report issues as needed.
- Maintain and repair gravel pathways.
- Rake and remove trash.
- Operate manual and power tools and motorized vehicles safely.
- Assist and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associates degree in Horticulture or closely related field (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the horticultural field that demonstrates knowledge of horticultural principles, landscape management techniques, plant identification, and garden design concepts
- Valid Texas driver’s license (current and in good standing)
- Obtain a Non-Commercial Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide license in Ornamental and Turf categories within six (6) months of hire, continued employment may be contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word

- Be a collaborative team player committed to maintaining positive engagement with colleagues and the public
- Work in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks
- Operate manual and power tools in accordance with BBP standard operating procedures
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Work flexible hours as needed, including some Saturdays for volunteer events
