Buena Vista University is seeking a reliable and motivated Groundskeeper to support the routine care, maintenance, and appearance of university grounds. This position plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, attractive, and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, and general lawn care
- Maintain trees, shrubs, flower beds, and landscaped areas
- Assist with seasonal duties such as snow and ice removal, leaf collection, and debris cleanup
- Collect and remove trash and litter from campus grounds
- Operate, maintain, and perform basic repairs on grounds equipment such as tractors, mowers, and hand tools
- Monitor grounds conditions and report maintenance or safety concerns to supervisors
- Follow established safety procedures and university policies
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated basic mechanical skills and ability to safely operate grounds equipment
- Ability to work outdoors in varying and inclement weather conditions
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or facilities maintenance
- Experience operating commercial mowing and maintenance equipment
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment. May occasionally be required to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and humidity.
- Ability to safely work around fertilizers, pesticides, cleaning agents, and other chemicals commonly used in grounds maintenance while utilizing required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to tolerate exposure to common environmental conditions associated with outdoor work, including dust, pollen, grass, insects, and varying terrain.
- Ability to work flexible schedule as needed, including early mornings or weekends during peak seasons or weather events.
