What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accessible Materials Production Specialist position at Bucks County Intermediate Unit?
The Accessible Materials Production Specialist will assist in the production of materials to provide meaningful access to the curriculum for students with visual impairments or other learning needs. These services convert materials, including textbooks and related curriculum materials, to one or more student-ready accessible formats, based on student learning media needs. The Accessible Materials Production Specialist works in conjunction with assigned Teachers of the Visually Impaired or other instructional personnel. This position may include remote work, telecommuting, or off-site work arrangements, based on supervisor approval.

- Regular attendance is required either in-person or approved remote work.
- Work with materials to match learning needs to appropriate modifications.
- Use high/low tech devices and equipment to modify under the direction of the Teacher of the Visually Impaired.
- Demonstrate self-confidence and efficiency in production of materials
- Distribute accurately modified curricular materials in a timely manner.
- Advanced Windows navigation and troubleshooting.
- Advanced word processing and editing skills.
- Ability to work in multiple windows and programs simultaneously.
- Convert and remediate standard textbooks, documents, and digital files into accessible alternative formats.
- Create and apply alternative text (alt text) to images and graphics to ensure accessibility.
- Review and correct documents and Media Remediation.
- Create, tag, and remediate PDF documents to meet accessibility standards.
- Audit and evaluate digital and print instructional resources for accessibility and compliance.
- Test and verify documents, files, and digital platforms using screen readers and other assistive technologies.
- Identify and resolve accessibility barriers to ensure instructional materials can be effectively accessed by students with disabilities.
Physical Demands: This position may require regular on-site presence and includes a combination of sedentary and active physical duties. Employees are regularly required to sit, communicate effectively, use hands for fine motor tasks, and move throughout the work environment. Frequent activities may include walking, standing, reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching, and positioning at student level for extended periods of time. Depending on assignment and student needs, employees may also be required to assist with transitions, mobility support, and instructional or daily living activities.
The employee must be able to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 25 pounds occasionally. Certain assignments may require assisting students with mobility or physical support needs that exceed 25 pounds, with appropriate training and support provided in accordance with program expectations and safety procedures.
Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees must also be able to hear and interpret sounds within the environment, including student communication, alarms, and other potential safety concerns.
Regular attendance, dependable onsite presence, and the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a part-time hourly, 185-day calendar position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, hours may vary based on district assignments, program needs, meetings, training, or organizational priorities. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required as job duties in demand.
Travel: No regular travel is required for this position. Occasional travel to meetings, trainings, conferences, Bucks IU locations, or other work-related activities may be necessary based on organizational needs.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Meet the designation of this position by showing evidence of the following:
- High School Diploma required.
- Participation in ongoing training in Accessible material production.
- Competency with computer troubleshooting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to follow directions
- Maintain confidentiality
- Ability to troubleshoot embossing equipment
- Ability to learn the braille alphabet
- Effectively communicate in oral and written form
- Ability to follow health and safety precautions
Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable): Citizenship or work authorization to work in the United States required.
