We are seeking a compassionate and professional Licensed Funeral Director to join our team. This role is responsible for providing dignified funeral, burial, and cremation services while guiding families through arrangements with care, respect, and attention to detail. The ideal candidate is licensed in the State of Indiana, communicates effectively, and works collaboratively with families, staff, and community partners. Summary

The Funeral Director provides compassionate and professional final disposition services, including remembrance, burial, and cremation arrangements. This role serves families with dignity and respect while ensuring all services are delivered in accordance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and the Cycle of Excellence service model. The Funeral Director works collaboratively with families, coworkers, management, cemeteries, and funeral operations staff, participates in community outreach initiatives, and promptly addresses family concerns in coordination with the management team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Comply with all funeral home and cemetery policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Conduct arrangement conferences with families or authorized representatives to plan services, make appropriate recommendations, and ensure all details are executed accurately and sensitively.
  • Deliver and follow through on all service details to ensure complete family satisfaction, including honoring special requests and instructions.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of funeral service options, merchandise, supplemental products, and associated costs.
  • Assist Family Service Advisors with family matters as needed.
  • Coordinate, direct, and assist with funeral, memorial, graveside, and cremation services.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and complete processing of all required documentation and permits.
  • Coordinate service delivery with the Funeral Operations Center and all supporting staff.
  • Maintain professional and cooperative relationships with cemeteries, administrative staff, operations teams, and key community partners.
  • Participate in community outreach, public relations activities, and special events.
  • Achieve and maintain all required continuing education units (CEUs) and professional designations as applicable.
  • Adhere to the organization’s employee handbook, policies, procedures, and all applicable employment and safety laws (including OSHA, ADA, FMLA, workers’ compensation, and state codes).

Required Skills

  • Compassionate and professional communication skills with the ability to support families during times of grief.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to problem-solve creatively and apply sound judgment in sensitive situations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly to individuals or groups.
  • Basic mathematical skills, including calculating percentages, discounts, commissions, and related figures.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, internet applications, and funeral service software.

Experience & Education

  • Successful completion of an accredited mortuary science program.
  • Passing of the Arts and Sciences sections of the National Board Examination.
  • Previous funeral service experience preferred, though internship-level candidates may be considered.

Licensure

  • Must hold and maintain a valid Indiana State Board Funeral Director License or Intern License in good standing.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, talk, and hear.
  • Frequently required to stand for extended periods and work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Occasionally required to sit, reach, and use hands and arms.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires close vision and the ability to perform tasks requiring visual accuracy.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in funeral homes, cemeteries, crematories, and outdoor environments.
  • Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and chemical substances.
  • Noise levels are generally moderate.
