What are the responsibilities and job description for the AOI Inspector – SMT / PCBA position at BSU Electronics?
About the role
BSU Electronics has built high-reliability electronics in Austin for more than 35 years. We are ITAR-registered and build for government agencies, defense contractors, and high-tech OEMs, often taking complex, high-mix builds other shops turn away. As our AOI Inspector, you are the first line of defense on every SMT run. You catch defects at the source, give the line fast feedback, and have the authority to stop production when something isn't right.
What you'll do
- Perform first-article inspection on every new build before full production, verifying components, placement, and orientation against the assembly drawing, BOM, and reference designators
- Set up and run our Koh Young AOI system to catch placement, polarity, and solder defects during production
- Review AOI calls, then identify, classify, and disposition defects to IPC-A-610 Class 2 and Class 3 criteria
- Fine-tune AOI programs to reduce false calls, and flag recurring process or program issues to engineering
- Stop production and escalate immediately on major defects or systemic issues
- Give SMT operators real-time feedback so problems get fixed on the line, not downstream
- Document inspection results and write daily quality pass-downs for the next shift and engineering
- Review process instructions and job documentation before each run
- Follow and enforce ESD, MSD handling, safety, housekeeping, and equipment maintenance procedures
- Hours of 7-3:30pm initially (for a training period) then 2:30-11pm (second shift position).
What you bring
- 2 years of AOI operation or electronics inspection in an EMS / contract manufacturing environment
- Current IPC-A-610 and/or J-STD-001 certification (if yours has lapsed, tell us, since we can recertify the right candidate)
- Strong component knowledge (resistors, capacitors, diodes, ICs, fine-pitch and BGA packages), including polarity markings
- Ability to read assembly drawings, BOMs, and reference designators
- Koh Young experience strongly preferred; other platforms (Omron, CyberOptics, Mirtec, Viscom, Saki, etc.) considered
- A precise, consistent eye: much of the shift is close review of AOI images and boards under magnification
- Normal color vision, since polarity marks and component markings depend on it
- Comfort working in an ESD-controlled production area
- Working knowledge of Excel and email; clear written and spoken English
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be a U.S. Person under 22 CFR § 120.62 (U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee), required for ITAR-controlled work
Benefits:
- 401(k)
- Dental insurance
- Health insurance
- Paid time off
- Vision insurance

- Have you inspected assemblies to IPC-A-610 Class 3 (high-reliability, such as military, aerospace, or medical)?
- Briefly describe a defect you caught that the AOI machine missed, or a false call you fixed. What was it, and what did you do?
- In the last 5 years, how many jobs have you left after less than 2 years? (Don't count layoffs, plant closures, or temporary assignments that ended as planned.)
- What hourly pay range are you targeting for this role?
