Engineer II, Product Develop. – Gas Technology

New Bern, NC / Full-time

Your Responsibilities

The Gas Technology and Combustion Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of gas combustion systems used in residential cooking appliances, including freestanding ranges, built-in ovens and professional ranges. The gas technology engineer will focus particularly on atmospheric burner systems installed within oven cavities, including bake burners, broil burners, ignition systems, flame-monitoring systems, gas distribution components, cavity ventilation, and the interaction between combustion performance and cooking performance. This position serves as a technical specialist for gas cooking technology and works closely simulation, testing, certification, quality, manufacturing, purchasing, suppliers, and global engineering teams. The engineer will translate consumer, regulatory, safety, quality, performance, and cost requirements into robust gas-system designs suitable for high-volume appliance production.

  • Design and develop gas burners for ovens and ranges.
  • Optimize burner geometry, port design, fuel-air mixing, and flame distribution.
  • Develop bake, broil and convection-burner, ignition, and flame-sensing systems.
  • Size injectors, orifices, valves, regulators, manifolds, tubing, and gas-system components.
  • Develop systems for natural gas, propane, and applicable regional fuel types.
  • Evaluate the effects of gas pressure, composition, altitude, temperature, humidity, and component tolerances.
  • Optimize interactions between burners, oven cavities, airflow, insulation, venting, racks, and convection systems.
  • Improve oven temperature uniformity, cooking performance, preheat time, recovery, and energy efficiency.
  • Define ignition sequences, burner cycling, fault detection, retry logic, lockout, and safe shutdown requirements.
  • Plan and execute combustion, thermal, performance, reliability, and safety testing.
  • Measure gas input, pressure, airflow, emissions, ignition time, flame stability, temperatures, and combustion noise.
  • Use gas analyzers, thermocouples, flowmeters, pressure sensors, data-acquisition systems, infrared cameras, and high-speed imaging.
  • Support compliance with CSA/ANSI Z21.1, EN 30, the EU Gas Appliances Regulation, and other applicable standards.
  • Apply thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, combustion theory, and engineering calculations.
  • Use CFD and thermal simulation to analyze fuel-air mixing, airflow, combustion products, heat transfer, and component temperatures.
  • Correlate simulation results with laboratory testing and improve model accuracy.
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, DFMEAs, tolerance studies, and Design of Experiments.
  • Investigate combustion, ignition, temperature, noise, durability, and field-quality concerns.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and implement validated corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, manufacturing, quality, controls, certification, purchasing, and global engineering teams.
  • Develop technical standards, design guidelines, reusable architectures, training materials, and future gas-technology roadmaps.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Your profile

  • Four-Year College Degree (Engineering) – Required
  • Master’s Degree (Engineering) – Preferred
  • 3-5 Years Experience (Natural and LP gas system components) - Required
  • Product Development experience in high-end, complex, consumer-based products.
  • 3D CAD experience, preferable ‘NX’ (Unigraphics’)
  • PLM/PDM knowledge, Team Center is preferable
  • Solid knowledge of FMEA, DFMA, DfR, target costing, risk management and other engineering tools.
  • Strong communication, presentation and persuasion skills
  • Understanding and interpretation of standards and norms
  • Close attention to detail.
  • Quick learner and self-starter, good analytical skills using specific engineering tools.
  • Dependable with the ability to work with little supervision and as part of a working team.
  • Exhibits appropriate professional behavior including positive attitude, sense of urgency, independent judgment, teamwork, creative thinking and personal integrity to achieve department/corporate goals and objectives.
  • Travel: 10%
  • Any of the above requirements/qualifications may be waived for the successful candidate.

Your Pay & Benefits

The pay range posted for this position is based on the location noted in the posting title. Exact compensation offered may vary based on your specific skillset and work location. If the position is bonus or incentive eligible then the payments range from 0% to 200% of target with details laid out within the plan document.

  • Two weeks of paid vacation for all non-temporary status new hires below Director level positions. Vacation entitlement increases based on years of service with BSH.
  • Unlimited paid vacation for all Director and above level positions.
  • The greater of (a) 40 hours of paid sick leave or (b) state or local minimum requirements for paid leave (Non-Production Line).
  • 40 hours of paid personal leave (Production Line).
  • 12 days of paid holidays per year (max 8 hours paid per day).

  • BSH provides ongoing product training, uniforms, computer tablet, cell phone and a company vehicle for eligible positions.
