Duties
A paving crew member is responsible for the preparation, application, and finishing of paving materials (usually asphalt).
- Site Preparation: Removing old pavement, debris, and leveling the base surface using hand tools or small machinery.
- Material Application: Shoveling, raking, and spreading asphalt or concrete to specific thicknesses.
- Luting and Raking: Using specialized "lutes" (long-handled rakes) to smooth out the material and ensure a level surface before rolling.
- Equipment Operation: Operating or assisting with machinery such as pavers, rollers, skid steers, and plate compactors.
- Traffic Control: Setting up cones, signs, and acting as a flagger to ensure the safety of the crew and the public when needed.
Experience
- Prior construction site experience is highly preferred, especially in paving
- Hands-on experience operating heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, or dump trucks is a plus
- Mechanical knowledge related to construction equipment maintenance and troubleshooting is advantageous
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or experience with commercial vehicle operation is a plus but not required
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions while maintaining safety and quality standards
