Bryn Mawr College has an opening for an Assistant Director of Career Counseling.

This position will work to support the mission of the Career & Civic Engagement Center, which is to provide opportunities for students to maximize their liberal arts education, preparing them to make intentional decisions about their future. The position will do this work by providing career counseling and advising to undergraduates and alumnae/i up to 1 year out on career choice and exploration, job search strategies including resume development, interview and job search skills, and graduate/professional school application process and materials. The Assistant Director will organize and execute the Externship program and the Job & Grad School Boot Camp program. The Assistant Director will act as the primary staff contact for the Forte Foundation, actively recruiting and supervising student ambassadors and promoting Forte programs, resources and services across campus. The individual will collaborate with others on the Career & Civic Engagement Center team to develop services and programs that meet the career interests of the students.

Responsibilities

Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key collaborators: students, alumnae/i, staff.
  • Provide positive client-centered support as demonstrated through actions and attitude when working with students, alumnae/i, staff.
  • Attend professional meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as main point-person for graduate schools wishing to table on campus. Build and maintain relationships with graduate school representatives.
  • Connect with 5 new external partners (alumnae/i, employers, friends of the college per year) to expand the Bryn Mawr network.
  • Recruit, train and supervise Forte Ambassadors.
  • Collaborate with Forte Ambassadors to develop and execute a robust strategy that increases student engagement in Forte programs, events, and resources.

Student Engagement

  • Help students articulate the value of their liberal arts degree for post graduate preparation.
  • Provide career counseling to students through individual appointments, telephone, social media, and email communication and document career counseling notes.
  • Assist students in determining career goals and objectives through self-evaluation; assess career interests and recommend paths of exploration and decision making to achieve goals.
  • Advise and counsel students and alumnae/i up to 1 year out on matters related to career and professional development and the internship/job search/graduate school process.

Data Management/Program Administration

  • Keep counseling notes, participate in counselor meetings to address any common questions or concerns.
  • Provide a minimum of 6-10 workshops per academic year.
  • Develop, conduct, and market skills development workshops in coordination with the Career & Civic Engagement Center strategy.
  • Critique resumes, cover letters, and application essays, providing timely feedback to students.
  • Participate and help plan career activities including, but not limited to: employer and graduate school information sessions, career fairs, open houses, student events, off campus recruiting, and networking events.
  • Use key Center platforms and technology tools to manage aspects of the work. These include, but are not limited to, Handshake, People Grove, Qualtrics, LinkedIn, Raiser’s Edge, Excel, etc.to enhance and bolster our work.

Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling, student/human development, higher education administration, student affairs, and/or related fields required. Two to three years of career counseling or academic advising in higher education setting with familiarity of graduate/professional school application and admissions requirements. Must have strong computing skills, knowledge of social media, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and ability to work on teams. Develop strong relationships with students and alumnae/i. Possess organizational, problem-solving, and priority-setting skills.

  • Knowledge of career development theories, counseling processes.
  • Multicultural competency and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and presentations in large groups.
  • Experience designing and delivering career-related workshops and programs.
  • Excellent verbal, written, public relations, and social media communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to work effectively with a college student population and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Self-starter, energetic, organized, flexible, and innovative.
  • Proven track record in establishing effective working relationships with students, alumnae/i and staff.
  • Strong interest in working with liberal arts college students and promoting liberal arts.
  • Demonstrated experience providing career counseling to address a broad range of career/employment issues.
  • Experience with career and personality assessment tools (ex. CliftonStrengths, Strong Interest Inventory)
  • Familiarity with current technology for use in Career Development including Handshake, People Grove, LinkedIn, and Qualtrics.
  • Able to attend or facilitate occasional evening and weekend events and drop-in hours.
