General Function

The Instructional Designer collaborates with faculty and staff to design, develop, and enhance high-quality learning experiences for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. The position provides expertise in instructional design, educational technology, accessibility, faculty development, and Quality Matters (QM) standards by supporting course design, technology integration, and the effective use of emerging instructional technologies to promote student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and revise engaging, student-centered learning experiences for face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses.
  • Consult with faculty to apply evidence-based instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and effective instructional strategies to course development.
  • Guide faculty in aligning course learning outcomes, instructional materials, learning activities, and assessments.
  • Assist faculty with course organization, navigation, and content structure to promote student success.
  • Develop and maintain courses within the College's Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Assist faculty and students with the implementation and use of publisher course materials.
  • Assist faculty with the integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) into course design.
  • Recommend and support the use of multimedia, interactive content, and digital learning resources.
  • Ensure courses comply with accessibility standards, ADA requirements, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  • Utilize accessibility tools such as Brickfield Accessibility Toolkit, Ally, or comparable platforms to evaluate and improve course accessibility.
  • Monitor emerging educational technologies and instructional trends, including artificial intelligence (AI), adaptive learning, and digital learning tools.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend educational technologies that enhance teaching and learning.
  • Pilot, implement, and assess new instructional technologies prior to broader institutional adoption.
  • Manage the ongoing support of educational technology platforms by providing training, consultation, documentation, and technical assistance.
  • Collaborate with Information Technology and other campus departments to support instructional technology initiatives.
  • Develop best practices and guidance for the effective, ethical, and responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.
  • Conduct faculty training sessions on instructional design, online pedagogy, educational technologies, accessibility best practices, and related topics.
  • Create and maintain instructional documentation, guides, job aids, and knowledge base articles for faculty.
  • Provide technical and instructional support to faculty and staff by responding to requests submitted through the College's ticketing system.
  • Assist with the implementation and continuous improvement of course quality assurance initiatives.
  • Participate in course reviews using established quality standards and institutional best practices.
  • Analyze course effectiveness and recommend improvements based on assessment data, student feedback, and instructional best practices.
  • Maintain current knowledge of instructional design methodologies, online learning, educational technology, accessibility standards, and distance education best practices.
  • Participate in institutional committees, special projects, and initiatives that support teaching excellence and student success.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience with a Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Knowledge of instructional design models
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience teaching or supporting instruction at a community college.
  • Experience designing or supporting online or hybrid courses in higher education.
  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting courses in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Experience with Quality Matters (QM) standards and course reviews.
  • Knowledge of copyright/fair use and Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • Proficiency with media design tools (e.g., Camtasia, Adobe Creative Cloud, Articulate).
