The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, through Brown Health Medical Group, serves as the academic emergency medicine practice plan for the Brown University medical community.

The department provides emergency care and faculty staffing across four major hospitals in Rhode Island: Rhode Island Hospital, the region’s only Level I Trauma Center; Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the state’s only children’s specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital; and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital.

Collectively, our physicians and advanced practice providers treat more than 250,000 patients each year across these four sites, serving communities throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

The Department of EM is looking for a full-time Emergency Medicine Pediatric Advanced Practice Trainee (EMPAT) at Hasbro Children’s Hospital who is either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant.  

Applications will be accepted through February 1, 2026. The anticipated start date for these positions is September 1, 2026.

 

Our Mission:  "To provide up-to-date, problem-based learning in the field of pediatric emergency medicine in a state-of-the-art facility, and to exceed the expected role of a pediatric emergency medicine advanced practice provider."

Program Overview:

A 12-month post-graduate training program directed by the Department of EM faculty and Pediatric APPs to support a comprehensive pediatric emergency medicine training program.

The program utilizes Hasbro Children's Hospital as the site for the orientation, training, and clinical rotations for newly graduated or non-emergency medicine trained APPs.  Hasbro Children's Hospital is affiliated with The Alpert Medical School of Brown University & Brown University Health and is a teaching facility.

Program Requirements:

Your application MUST include the following documents to be considered:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Official transcripts or transcripts to date (GPA of 3.1 or higher)
  • Three letters of recommendation

The following items should be provided as part of the initial application (if available) or as soon as possible upon completion. These documents will be required as part of the hiring/credentialing process: 

  • Certificate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current NCCPA or AANP certification
  • Rhode Island state licensure (or eligibility)

Program Content

During the Development year, EMPATs receive training:

  • Five to ten hours of didactics including conferences each week with Brown Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows
  • Hands-on training at Hasbro Children's Hospital's Emergency Department
  • Procedure workshops and lectures provided by senior physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and appointed faculty
