What are the responsibilities and job description for the Curator of Animals - NEW Zoo position at Brown County?
Plans, provides and monitors day to day care of the entire Zoo's animal collection including feeding, cleaning and daily inspections. Oversees general exhibit minor maintenance and mowing as needed.
Provides, monitors and coordinates health care services for the zoological collection in accordance with contracted veterinary services.
Maintains all necessary records for the animal collections pertaining to vaccinations, breeding records, technical reports, USDA permits and other written documentation needed for maintenance. Provides registrar duties.
Full responsibility for management of Zookeeper staff, to include hiring, scheduling, and evaluating performance of Zookeeper staff. Plans, coordinates and conducts training for animal care staff.
Monitors expenses for the department related to the animal collection; helps implement departmental cost measurements to ensure compliance with budget limitations.
Assists in the procurement of grants and funding for the zoological facility and programs.
Assists in the development and implementation of long range plans and site renovation projects.
Assists in the maintenance of accreditation of the facility through Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and ensures all facilities, programs and collections are maintained in accordance with the state and federal regulations. Develops, documents and implements policy, procedure and protocol for all aspects of animal collection, animal programs, and animal care staff.
Develops, plans, and oversees breeding, enrichment and behavioral programs as well as all diets and maintenance routines including monitoring, ordering and inventory for feeding and medications.
Assists in development and maintenance of exhibits, animal collections and zoo facilities including obtaining animals for zoo collection through purchases, loans and exchange, reallocation/relocation of surplus animals and public relations programming.
Serves as Institutional Representative and Program leader for committees communicating with the AZA as directed.
Represents the NEW Zoo in local and national media.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college in Veterinary Care, Animal Husbandry, Zoo Science, Zoology, Captive Wildlife, Animal Behavior or related field plus at least 5 years professional experience in zoo operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Wisconsin Driver's License
Individual AZA professional membership
Knowledge of individual animal behavior, health care and husbandry.
Knowledge of federal, state rules and regulations regarding display, exhibition, acquisition and disposal of animals.
Knowledge of basic veterinary techniques and methods used in the care and treatment of captive wildlife.
Knowledge of population genetics, mate choice dynamics, and other aspects of population management.
Knowledge of marketing techniques and methods.
Knowledge of and ability to perform long range planning.
Knowledge of budget preparation and management.
Knowledge of and ability to implement plans regarding zoo safety and security procedures and operations.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and required software.
Ability to recognize animal behavioral and health problems.
Ability to maintain complex records and documents.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, the public and professional consultants.
Ability to supervise, direct, train and evaluate the work of assigned personnel.
