Incumbent serves as Laborer for the Brown County Highway Department, responsible for driving and operating vehicles and equipment, maintaining roadways and adjacent areas, and performing traffic control around work sites.

DUTIES:

Drives and operates vehicles and equipment following safety procedures, including, but not limited to, transporting materials and equipment to and from work sites and removing roadkill and fallen trees.

Maintains roadways and adjacent areas, including, but not limited to, installing culvert pipes, guardrails, and signs, patching holes, and paving roads.

Performs traffic control around work sites, including flagging traffic, setting road signs, placing traffic cones.

Performs manual labor duties such as cleaning culverts and cutting brush.

Performs seasonal duties, including removing snow and ice and mixing and applying salts and abrasives.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

High school diploma or HSE with one (1) or more years of experience.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all Department hiring and retention requirements, including passage of a drug test and medical examination.

Working knowledge of with ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OHSA guidelines.

Working knowledge of assigned Department trucks and equipment with ability to follow safety measures.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation with ability to prepare daily work log.

Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, air nozzle, air compressor, driver, ratchet, broom, mop, gauges, steam cleaner, files, and other tools as needed.

Ability to operate a variety of machinery and equipment in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, trucks, pressure washer, and other equipment as needed.

Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, driving, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/grasping/fingering objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, close/far vision, depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and speaking clearly.

Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, Department information and records according to State requirements.

Shall comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations.

Ability to occasionally work extended hours, evenings, and weekends and regularly respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and from an off-duty status.

Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs duties with work priorities and schedules primarily determined by the supervisor. Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives. Incumbent establishes procedures and performance standards and interprets policies and refers to supervisor when interpretations of Departmental policies and procedures are thought necessary.

Incumbent reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent.

III. PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent's duties involve sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, driving, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/grasping/ fingering objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, close/far vision, depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and speaking clearly. Strain may be intense for frequent or moderate duration and effort is exerted regularly for sustained periods, usually in connection with such duties as bending and shoveling.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs a majority of duties in a garage/shop, outdoors, and in trucks and heavy equipment, involving exposure to extreme temperatures, wet/icy surroundings, walking on uneven terrain, fumes/odors/dust/dirt, heights, and noisy environments. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others, including wearing protective clothing and equipment.

Incumbent is occasionally required to work extended hours, evenings, and weekends and is regularly required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis

Pay: $44,139.14 per year
