Summary:
Under the direction of a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and/or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), the Respiratory Therapist Extern is a full-time student in an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program who assists with basic respiratory care procedures and supports department operations. The extern is responsible for assembling, transporting, disinfecting, calibrating, and troubleshooting respiratory-related equipment and ensuring appropriate equipment levels in various work areas. The extern also assists with basic respiratory care procedures and tasks, including performing limited, low-risk respiratory therapy procedures as directed. All tasks are performed under supervision and within demonstrated competency.
Education:
Essential:
Enrollment in a Respiratory Therapy Program and completion of 1 full Respiratory Therapy Clinical Rotation. Or completion of the BS/Associate Respiratory Therapy program with application to take the respiratory therapy license. Extending expected graduation date, due to failing grades or dropping out of a Respiratory Therapy program is a condition for automatic termination as a Respiratory Therapy Extern. After graduation, the extern may apply for employment as a Respiratory Therapist and may be hired, based on meeting the educational and experience criteria, as well as availability of position openings for the Registered Respiratory Therapist job description. In either case, employment as a Respiratory Extern will cease up to 3 months after graduation or failure to obtain Respiratory Therapy License.
Experience: Must obtain Respiratory Therapy licensure within 3 months of graduation.
