The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Groundskeeper at Port Everglades.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires three (3) months of experience in landscape maintenance or closely related experience.

The Groundskeeper position with Port Everglades Seaport Facilities Maintenance Division performs a variety of general building and grounds-related maintenance and repairs at assigned Port facilities.

General Description

Performs work involving the development and care of grounds, shrubbery and plants and the performance of irrigation maintenance and repairs.

Interacts with the public and/or other County employees in order to give directions/information, explain work activities/procedures, identify their service needs, and/or resolve day-to-day operational issues.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires three (3) months of experience in landscape maintenance or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required:
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Seaport Business Purpose Credential for the duration of employment.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance, with occasional requirements for work after regular business hours.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Mow grass; plant and transplant shrubs, trees, and other landscape plants; fertilize lawn and plants; trim bushes and trees; spray lawn and shrubs to control insects, diseases, and pests; remove weeds and other non-preferred plants from landscaped, natural, and hard-spaced areas; rake and remove grass cuttings and leaves; sweep or blow adjacent streets and walkways; load and unload soil, sand, sod, rock, gravel and other ground covering materials as required.

Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, trimmers, saws, pick ax, ladders, spades, pitchforks, and brooms to perform groundskeeper responsibilities.

Operate power mowers, trimmers, blowers, sprayers, chain saws, and other small tools and equipment; maintain equipment in good working condition.

May operate and work from trencher, skid-steer, forklift, boom lift, scissors lift, and other heavy equipment as needed for the job. 

Perform repair, maintenance, and care of irrigation systems and pumps.

Operate trencher to dig ditches for irrigation and drainage lines; 

Perform irrigation systems checks to look for broken lines, heads, and leaks, and make needed repairs.

Perform field tests on irrigation systems to determine efficiency, and calculate accurate watering schedules for irrigation systems by combining plant water use, soils, and local weather data.

Pick up litter in and around the Port, berths, terminals, landscaped areas, streets, and fence lines.

Assist in terminal operations, setting up traffic control devices, moving furniture, and other manual labor tasks.

Perform prep and clean-up procedures for Port facilities relative to storms and other natural or man-made disasters or emergencies. 

Make recommendations to the supervisor of repairs, upgrades, and tasks required beyond capabilities or ability.

Prepare various log sheets to document work activities, track equipment usage, and provide summary information to management.

Use handheld devices, computers, radios, cell phones, and other electronic equipment to track work, communicate with others, and complete work assignments.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Work requires heavy physical exertion and effort. Forces exerted are equivalent to lifting between 25 and 50 pounds. A variety of physical demands are required to perform maintenance tasks and follow-up, work on equipment and tools, assist in emergency scenarios with performing manual tasks and operating equipment. Tasks include lifting, pushing, sliding/transferring, carrying equipment, tools, supplies, and stocking materials. 

Examples:

  • carry/lift bags of mulch, rocks, sand, etc. to areas for placement, carry pieces of cut trees for trimming and removal

  • pushing lawn mowers

  • sliding /transferring bags of materials from trucks

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, and exposure to extreme heat and humidity. 

Exposure to dampness, sun, and a noisy work area; wearing rubber or plastic gloves; wearing safety glasses; work in water; working shifts; working w/rotating machinery.County Core Competencies
