  1. High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
  2. Two (2) years of experience and/or training demonstrating journeyperson knowledge, skills, and abilities in general maintenance work to include HVAC, electrical, electronics, plumbing or carpentry. Such experience should be clearly demonstrated in the initial application or resume.
  3. Must possess and maintain throughout employment, a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance. Driver license must show current address. 
    • All candidates must submit with the application, a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history.
    • Florida driving histories can be obtained at any courthouse in Broward County. Three (3) year, seven (7) year, and online Florida driving history records will not be accepted. If you have possessed a driver's license in any other state in the past 10 years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state.  For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that state's division of motor vehicles
    • The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources.

  4. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Such experience must be clearly documented on the application.

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of installation maintenance and repair work in one or more of the trade disciplines within the Department of Detention and Community Programs of the Broward Sheriff's Office. Incumbents assigned to a detention environment are responsible for installing and maintaining highly sophisticated state-of-the-art systems designed to support effective and efficient corrections operations, e.g., security systems, lock-down systems, and communications systems. Incumbents assigned to Fire Rescue are responsible for maintaining medical equipment and devices in compliance with departmental standards. Incumbents perform essential functions as outlined herein according to functional area of assignment. Performs related work as directed.The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.
 
Performs skilled maintenance and repairs on structures, facilities, equipment, and other Sheriff's Office property in one or more of the trade disciplines, i.e., electrical, electronics, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry.
 
Performs installation of units, systems and components of the assigned work, i.e., alarm systems, plumbing features, control panels, windows, medical devices.
 
Reads blueprints, diagrams, specifications, manuals, and/or sketches in the preparation and performance of tasks.
 
Ensures all work performed adheres to established safety standards, building codes and regulations, and engineering standards where applicable.
 
Ability to troubleshoot equipment and service generator components including alternators, wireless harnesses, safety devices, shutdown switches, starters, and battery systems.
 
Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules or when directed.
 
Operates various standard hand-held manual, electrical, and gas powered tools and equipment.
 
Operates a variety of specialized trade specific tools and equipment, i.e., diagnostic instruments, welders, leak detectors, trade specific meters and gauges.
 
Works in a variety of confined or enclosed spaces, i.e., ceilings, boiler rooms, cells, duct systems. 
 
Performs various record maintenance duties where applicable, i.e., work orders, materials and supplies ordered/utilized, cost estimates, labor required, maintenance logs.
 
Recognizes and reports any detected deterioration, repair needs, and maintenance needs.
 
Cleans and disinfects medical equipment and devices according to departmental procedures.
 
Maintains appropriate protection levels in the proper care and use of barrier devices for protection against Blood Borne pathogens
 
Ensures proper use, maintenance, care, and accounting of materials, tools and equipment.
 
May operate an agency vehicle
 
Performs related duties as directed.

Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, climbing, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Requires intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100 pounds). Incumbents may be assigned to agency wide functions, or may be specifically assigned to responsibilities in a corrections environment, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents. Tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, loud noise, electrical currents, toxic/chemical agents, pathogens, violent behavior. Tasks include working around moving parts, equipment, carts, and materials handling where physical risks are predictable/controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
