The Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) maintains and improves the County's roadway systems, operates and maintains drawbridges, and oversees mosquito control operations. HBMD is responsible for cleaning and mowing rights-of-way, street patching and resurfacing, intersection improvements, canal maintenance and construction, guardrail maintenance, bridge maintenance, street cleaning, and storm-water drainage improvements.
The successful candidate will be proficient in the use of various light construction equipment necessary for performing road maintenance and repair projects such as: forklifts, aerial lift trucks, tree chippers, skid-steer loaders, vibratory rollers, plate compactors, walk-behind concrete/asphalt saws.
General Description
Performs skilled work in the operation of large vehicles and equipment.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Preferences
- Associates or vocational degree in heavy equipment operation or closely related field
- Construction Management Certificate
- State of Florida issued Class "B" or "A" Commercial Driver's License WITH tanker endorsement
- Broward County Certificate of Competency or State certification for related roadway construction.
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification
- Certified Heavy Equipment Operator
- Storm-water Certification.
- At least one (1) year of experience with asphalt, drainage, guardrails or concrete construction on roadways
- At least one (1) year of experience operating a single-axle dump truck or tandem dump truck
- At least one (1) year of experience in operating a jet-vac truck or street sweeper
- At least one (1) year of maintenance experience with fixed bridges or draw bridges
- At least two (2) years of experience handling/removing storm debris - declared emergency
SCOPE OF WORK
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Transports construction equipment using a lowbed semi-trailer; operates tractor-trailer and tandem trucks in local hauling tasks; loads and unloads vehicles as required; operates heavy duty road roller in resurfacing and roadway construction; operates front-end loader or small tractor rigged with hydraulic loading lift and back hoe digging shovel; operates tractor and "bush hog" for mowing roadway shoulders and removing vegetation from drainage ditches; operates sweeper truck for cleaning roadways; may operate smaller earth moving equipment such as small bulldozers and bobcats.
Performs operator pre-checks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems; makes necessary minor adjustments and reports malfunctions to supervisor.
Performs related work as assigned.
