About the Job

Brookwood has recently expanded our company with the purchase of a new manufacturing facility, increasing our impact on textile manufacturing in New England. The additional manufacturing capabilities of the company demand additional environmental, health and safety oversight. Brookwood is committed to maintaining and promoting environmental compliance, and a safe, healthy, and injury-free environment. Brookwood is hiring a second EHS Specialist to achieve this commitment

This is an exciting position offering a full-time work schedule and the opportunity to make a significant contribution to our continued industry advancement! This position will be based out of the Rhode Island (RI) Brookwood Finishing facility and will also have EHS responsibilities at the Brookwood Laminating facility in Wauregan, Connecticut (CT). Additional work at Brookwood's Swan Dyeing & Printing facility in Fall River, Massachusetts (MA) may also be required on an intermittent basis.

This role is responsible for the development, implementation, and sustainment of environmental, health & safety programs, standards, and procedures at the facilities. The EHS Specialist will report to the Director of EHS and work in conjunction with a second EHS Specialist to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations and foster a safe and healthy workplace. The EHS Specialist will drive continuous improvement initiatives to ensure the safety of all Brookwood employees and will champion site-specific initiatives.

Essential Functions - Safety:

• Aid in the development and implementation of programs to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations (e.g., Job Hazard Analysis, Personal Protective Equipment, Lock Out-Tag Out, Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, Powered Industrial Trucks, Emergency Response, Hearing Conservation, Incident Management, Fall Protection).
• Prepare, update, and enforce EHS policies to maintain a strong culture of safety.
• Lead safety committees and meetings, creating materials and actions accordingly.
• Facilitate, document, and ensure all employees receive the required safety training.
• Investigate incidents and identify corrective and preventative measures.
• Conduct risk assessments to identify, evaluate, and control hazards.
• Continually identify and where appropriate, implement industry safety best practices.

Essential Functions - Environmental:

Actively manage policies, procedures, programs and databases to ensure alignment with federal, state, and company requirements in the following areas:

• Wastewater Compliance: Brookwood Finishing’s Rhode Island Pollution Discharge Elimination System (RIPDES) permit,
• Air Compliance: Brookwood Laminating’s Minor Source air permit and reporting requirements,
• Hazardous waste (RCRA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance, as required,
• Stormwater permitting and technologies management (SWPPP), as required,
• Subsurface investigation and remedial oversight, as required.

Compliance will include:

• Data entry and preparation of reports for issue to site leadership and regulatory agencies,
• Oversee and assist the EHS Mechanic in the operation of the company’s wastewater treatment facility and the conduct of routine environmental inspections,
• Review and maintain daily wastewater treatment plant operating logs,
• Stormwater and wastewater sampling and analysis coordination, as required.

Essential Functions - General:

• Review and interpret EHS regulations to determine their relevance to company activities.
• Conduct periodic reviews of written programs to ensure ongoing regulatory compliance.
• Conduct internal audits, and complete necessary regulatory and internal compliance reports.
• Execute EHS-related training curriculum associated with company policies and regulatory requirements, including new employee orientation, and routine environmental and safety training.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree: Environmental, health and safety, environmental studies, environmental engineering, Safety Management, or related field.
• Safety Experience: Minimum 1 year of hands-on work.
• Excellent communication skills: Must be able to communicate both technical and non-technical information clearly and concisely across all levels of the organization from leadership group to employees working on the shop floor.
• People skills/Teamwork: In this role, the candidate will be required to build and maintain relationships, coordinate plans, distribute information and develop a mutual knowledge base for effective implementation of health and safety guidelines. The ability to collaborate effectively and work well with others is required.
• Critical thinking skills: The ability to resolve problems creatively using practical solutions is essential.
• Organizational skills: The candidate should be able to prioritize, schedule, and organize activities to meet the objectives of the company and the role. Must be able to adapt to change and unpredictable circumstances.
• Data management skills: The candidate will be working with Microsoft Outlook, Power Point, Word, and Excel. Familiarity with use of Access database a plus.
• Physical demands: This is a hands-on position, and work will be in a variety of settings including an office, a factory setting (this may include working in high temperatures), and an outside setting (this may include wet weather field work). The factory requires use of PPE (Safety Glasses, Safety Shoes, hearing protection and/or gloves depending on the activity being performed). Environmental conditions vary. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration as it is necessary to walk the shop floor. Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting and/or moving light objects up to fifteen (15) pounds, and occasionally lifting/moving items over fifty (50) pounds, climbing ladders, and bending/kneeling on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Three to five years of experience in implementing and maintaining Environmental, Health, and Safety compliance.
• Previous experience with RI and CT environmental regulations is a plus.
• Previous experience working in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, with strong focus on safety and a desire towards continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
• EHS related certifications are a plus.

The work week consists of a Monday-Friday schedule, with infrequent work on the weekend or evening, if necessary. Mileage reimbursement provided for travel to CT and MA facilities from RI facility.
