Structural Engineer II– Transmission & Substation Design
Location: Birmingham, AL (Energy Center)
Schedule: Hybrid – Field, Office, & Remote Work
Travel: Approximately 15% (Occasional Overnight Travel)
Long-Term Contract
We are seeking a Structural Engineer to support Transmission and Distribution Substation Design projects while also providing support to the Transmission Line Design Group.
This individual will be responsible for producing engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel, concrete foundations, and related infrastructure. The role places a strong emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and cost effectiveness.
This position offers a mix of office, field, and remote work. Candidates must be comfortable working independently in a virtual environment while also traveling to project sites as needed throughout the project lifecycle.
Major Responsibilities
- Make safety the number one priority by demonstrating a strong Safety First mindset.
- Prepare high-quality calculation and design packages for substation and transmission line facilities using CAD-based tools.
- Design and analyze new and existing substation structures.
- Perform structural steel analysis and design.
- Perform reinforced concrete design and analysis.
- Support foundation design activities for transmission and substation projects.
- Collaborate with engineers to support technical development and knowledge transfer.
- Coordinate and communicate with departments involved in civil and structural design.
- Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to resolve material and standards-related issues.
- Support Construction Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Maintenance teams.
- Conduct site visits, including pre-construction, construction, and post-construction activities.
- Participate in design review meetings.
- Provide work direction and oversight to designers and drafters.
- Support design criteria development and standardization efforts.
- Manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting project schedules and deadlines.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
- EIT Certification preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
Experience
- 5 years of structural steel and concrete design experience.
- Experience supporting industrial and/or commercial structural engineering projects.
- Foundation design experience required.
- Experience with seismic, wind, and vibration analysis preferred.
- Transmission line structure and foundation design experience is a plus.
