The Special Education Instructional Health Assistant supports students with diverse learning needs by providing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional assistance under the direction of certified teachers and special education staff. This role is essential in creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive learning environment where all students can grow, access instruction, and experience success while actively contributing to a positive, collaborative work environment for students and staff.
Position Details
Hours: 6.5 hours per day (plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch)
Contract Length: 183 days per year
- 170 student instructional days
- 4 holidays
- 7 planning days
- 2 extended days
Contract Adjustments: Contracted days will be prorated based on the start date
Employment Status: Full-time with benefits
Employment Type: 10-month employee on the classified pay schedule
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Must meet one of the following:
- 48 college semester hours
- An Associate’s Degree OR
- High school diploma plus a passing score on the Paraeducator Assessment Exam.
- Documentation: Candidates must provide proof of educational requirements to HR upon recommendation for hire.
Compensation & Experience Credit
Salary for the 2026-2027 school year will be based on Board approved salary schedule.
2025-2026 Pay Scale
- Starting Pay (Step 0): $15.98/hour
- Experienced Pay (Step 10): $19.67/hour
We value experience! Previous experience working with students, intervention systems, and small-group instruction is strongly desired.
New hires may bring up to 10 years of comparable, full-time, verified experience.
- The hired applicant is responsible for submitting the BCPS Verification of Experience Form to prior employers for completion and return to HR.
Payroll Note: While this is an hourly position, the salary is distributed via a year-long contract over 10 months. You will receive 4 paychecks at the end of June.
Salary Formula: Hours per day × Hourly rate = Daily rate <> Daily rate × Contracted days = Annual salary. <> Annual salary ÷ Remaining pay periods = Gross biweekly pay
