Building/Fire Inspector

Salary: $45,000–$56,000 annually
Job Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Building/Fire Inspector performs field inspections and technical work to ensure buildings, construction projects, properties, and facilities comply with applicable building, fire, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, energy, zoning, and related codes.

The position also assists with permits, certificates of occupancy, plan reviews, utility inspections, zoning enforcement, and communication with contractors, property owners, design professionals, and the public.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct residential and commercial building and fire inspections.
  • Inspect structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, energy, and fire-safety work.
  • Review construction documents, permits, site plans, and inspection records.
  • Issue inspection reports, correction notices, approvals, and certificates of occupancy.
  • Investigate complaints involving unsafe buildings, property maintenance, zoning, and code violations.
  • Assist contractors, property owners, and the public with permitting and code requirements.
  • Inspect construction sites, utility installations, and other assigned projects.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and prepare written reports.
  • Attend meetings, training programs, and court proceedings when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license.
  • Relevant construction, inspection, code enforcement, fire prevention, or permitting experience is preferred.
  • Up to two years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read construction plans, technical documents, codes, ordinances, and legal documents.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with contractors, property owners, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to perform basic measurements and construction-related calculations.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions based on adopted codes and procedures.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.

Certifications

Applicants must possess or be able to obtain assigned ICC, NFPA, State of Georgia, or other required certifications within a reasonable period of time.

Possible certifications may include:

  • Building Inspector
  • Electrical Inspector
  • Plumbing Inspector
  • Mechanical Inspector
  • Fuel Gas Inspector
  • Fire Inspector
  • Accessibility Inspector
  • Other certifications assigned by the supervisor

The employee must maintain required certifications through continuing education.

Working Conditions

This position involves both office and fieldwork. The employee will frequently work outdoors in varying weather conditions and at active construction sites. Duties may require climbing ladders, walking on roofs or scaffolding, crawling under structures, entering confined areas, bending, kneeling, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, and working around construction hazards.

Some evening or weekend inspections may be required. Frequent interaction with contractors, property owners, and members of the public is expected.

Required protective equipment may include steel-toed boots, a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and a safety vest.

Supervision

General supervision is provided by the Assistant Fire Chief/Development Services Manager or designee.
