Job Summary
The first-shift, Service Truck Mechanic position is responsible for supporting the Shop Department with mechanical-related issues. The Service Truck Mechanic will diagnose, perform preventative maintenance, and complete emergency repairs on vehicles and construction equipment both in the shop and in the field.
This role requires the ability to work independently, manage tasks efficiently and maintain productivity without direct supervision. This person must be self-motivated and possess strong time management skills.
The position may require travel between multiple job sites throughout the day. Extended periods of travel and time on the road may be necessary depending on operational needs.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Performs engine repairs and maintenance on company equipment.
- Repair and replace tires as needed.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic system issues.
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic system components.
- Conduct preventative maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
- Performs diagnostic testing to identify mechanical and electrical issues.
- Maintain accurate documentation of procedures and repairs for equipment records.
- Complete and maintain documentation required for OSHA compliance.
Other Duties/Responsibilities
- Assists others in department as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to provide a complete set of mechanical tools.
- Working knowledge of both gasoline and diesel engines.
- Experience servicing and repairing heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in diagnosing and repairing:
- Drivelines
- Hydraulic systems (pumps, drive motors, valves, lines, and cylinders)
- Electrical systems
- Suspension systems
- Chassis and frame components
- Familiarity with preventive, predictive, and proactive maintenance programs.
Education and Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience required; however, completion of a technical or trade school program may be considered an equivalent qualification.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Willingness and ability to join the appropriate local operating engineer's union
Physical Requirements
- Lifting/Carrying: Up to 10 lbs continuously, up to 50 lbs frequently, and up to 180 occasionally.
- Pushing/Pulling: Up to 10 lbs continuously, up to 50 lbs frequently, and up to 180 occasionally.
- Movement / Activities: Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending, and lifting.
- Continuous standing and walking on concrete and uneven surfaces.
- Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting/turning, and reaching above shoulder level.
- Occasional climbing and crawling in confined or cramped spaces.
- Occasional sitting and keyboarding for documentation purposes.
- Use of Hands: Continuous use of hands for handling tools, operating equipment, gripping, grasping, and performing fine manipulation.
- Driving: Frequent use of both automatic manual transmission vehicles.
Working Environment
- Work will be performed in a shop, yard, and outdoor jobsite environment.
- Exposure to electrical hazards and chemicals.
- Constant exposure to loud noises.
- Frequent exposure to moving machinery.
- Regular interaction with internal customers, including Foremen, Plant Operators, Superintendents, and Department Management.
- Flexibility with work hours is required to accommodate seasonal fluctuations.
- Must be willing to work overtime, nights, days, and weekends as needed.
