Overview

The Class I Licensed Wastewater Pretreatment Operator is responsible for the operation, monitoring, sampling, inspection, documentation, and reporting activities necessary to maintain and assure compliance with the wastewater pretreatment discharge permit, published pretreatment standards, local discharge limits, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position serves as the facility's primary wastewater compliance representative and helps ensure wastewater discharges are controlled, monitored, sampled, documented and reported in accordance with regulatory requirements and record keeping procedures

Duties

Wastewater System Operations

  • Operate and monitor wastewater pretreatment systems, neutralization systems, collection systems, flow measurement equipment, and related process controls.
  • Maintain wastewater treatment processes necessary to prevent prohibited discharges, pass-through, interference, and permit violations.
  • Monitor operating conditions to ensure wastewater characteristics remain within permit and regulatory limits.
  • Coordinate corrective actions when abnormal conditions, spills, equipment failures, or permit exceedances occur.

Compliance Monitoring

  • Conduct routine compliance monitoring in accordance with wastewater discharge permits and pretreatment program requirements.
  • Monitor regulated pollutants including metals, cyanide, oil and grease, PCBs, and any additional pollutants required by the regulatory authority.
  • Monitor wastewater flow, treatment system performance, and discharge characteristics.
  • Monitor pH and other critical treatment parameters to ensure compliance with established permit requirements.
  • Identify compliance trends and initiate corrective actions when permit limits may be approached or exceeded.

Sampling Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and implement wastewater sampling schedules.
  • Collect compliance samples using approved sampling procedures and techniques.
  • Perform grab sampling for pH, cyanide, total phenols, oil and grease, sulfide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Perform or oversee 24-hour flow-proportional composite sampling for metals and other regulated pollutants where required.
  • Verify that sample collection methods remain representative of the discharge.
  • Maintain sampling equipment and ensure proper preservation, storage, and transfer of samples.
  • Coordinate with certified laboratories for analytical testing.
  • Collect, pack, document and track samples sent to certified third party laboratories.

Monitoring Equipment and Instrumentation

  • Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and calibrate laboratory and inline continuous pH monitoring, conductivity and temperature systems, Flow meters, alarm systems and composite samplers will be maintained by Honeywell’s CEP maintenance team.
  • Maintain and adhere to equipment inspection, field verification checks and calibration schedules.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance and calibration records.
  • Verify proper operation of automatic sampling equipment before compliance sampling events.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs of wastewater monitoring equipment with the CEP maintenance team.

Recordkeeping and Documentation

  • Maintain complete and accurate wastewater compliance records.
  • Maintain records of sample collection activities, chain-of-custody documentation, laboratory analytical results, equipment inspections, calibration activities, corrective actions, and permit compliance activities.
  • Maintain wastewater discharge permits and regulatory correspondence.
  • Organize records for regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Ensure records are complete, accurate, and readily available for review.

Reporting Responsibilities

  • Prepare compliance monitoring reports and supporting documentation.
  • Review laboratory and inline instrumentation results for compliance with permit limits.
  • Communicate exceedances and anomalies with Operations staff to implement corrections.
  • Investigate and document permit exceedances and abnormal wastewater conditions.
  • Prepare corrective action reports as required.
  • Support regulatory reporting and permit renewal activities.
  • Assist management in responding to agency requests, inspections, audits, and inquiries.

pH Monitoring and Compliance

  • Maintain wastewater pH within permit requirements.
  • Monitor continuous pH data and investigate excursions.
  • Verify compliance with pH excursion limitations where continuous monitoring is required.
  • Communicate exceedances and anomalies with Operations staff to implement corrections
  • Document all pH-related corrective actions and operational adjustments.

Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with applicable pretreatment regulations and discharge standards.
  • Ensure that wastewater discharges do not contain prohibited pollutants or characteristics that could cause interference, pass-through, fire hazards, corrosive conditions, excessive temperatures, or other prohibited conditions.
  • Support inspections conducted by regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain awareness of changing environmental regulations and permit requirements.
  • Participate in environmental audits and compliance assessments.

Quality Assurance/Quality Control

  • Develop and adhere to SOPs and laboratory procedures covering sample collection, preservation, analytical testing, instrument calibration, chemical handling, safety, data recording, corrective actions and QA/QC program governance.
  • Develop and maintain a formal calibration program should exist for all laboratory and process measurement devices.
  • Organize documentation and record keeping, including organizing and archiving sample logs, laboratory reports, calibration certificates, preventive maintenance records, corrective actions and chain-of-custody (CoC) forms.
  • Calibration schedules, procedures, records, and certificates shall be current and maintained in a central location and readily retrieval for third part audits.
  • Maintain laboratory chemicals and standard solutions inventory tracker

Experience

  • Class I Wastewater Pretreatment Operator License or equivalent jurisdictional certification.
  • Associate degree in Water Treatment, Environmental Technology, Mechanical Technology, Industrial Operations, or related field preferred.
  • 5 years minimum experience operating industrial wastewater pretreatment systems.
  • Experience with flow-proportional composite sampling systems.
  • Experience with continuous pH monitoring and calibration.
  • Experience supporting environmental compliance audits and regulatory inspections.
  • Working knowledge of 40 CFR Part 403 Pretreatment Regulations and local wastewater discharge regulations.
  • Knowledge of industrial wastewater treatment processes and pretreatment systems.
  • Knowledge of wastewater sampling procedures and laboratory analytical practices.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance and wastewater discharge permits.
  • Experience with sampling, packing and managing third party laboratory sampling and analysis.
  • Experience with interpreting laboratory reports, permits, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to maintain accurate technical records and prepare regulatory reports.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets, monitoring databases, and electronic compliance records management systems.
  • Maintain continuous compliance with permit and pretreatment requirements.

Performance Expectations

  • Ensure all compliance samples are collected accurately and on schedule.
  • Maintain inspection-ready records at all times.
  • Promptly identify, investigate, and document compliance issues.
  • Support continuous improvement of the facility wastewater compliance program.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and records at all times.

Pay: $19.00 - $24.00 per hour
