ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: The Brooklyn Youth Tennis Association (BYTA) (previously known as Junior Tennis Clinic and Brooklyn Junior Tennis Clinic) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1988 by tennis enthusiasts Melvin Swanson and Kevin Harper. They had a deep desire to share their love of tennis with youth who would have otherwise not have had access to the sport due to its expensive costs. Mr. Swanson remains at the helm of the organization that has fulfilled its mission to provide professional, semi-private, low-cost and/or free tennis instruction to deserving young people in Central Brooklyn for over 30 years.
LOCATION: Brooklyn, NY (Multiple Sites)
POSITION DESCRIPTION: We’re seeking tennis coaches who will deliver high-quality tennis instruction to youth (ages 6-12) in underserved Brooklyn communities. The coaches will work with head coach, Melvin Swanson, to deliver tennis programming during in school and afterschool hours, and during summer clinics. Our programming serves children of all abilities, including those with special needs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Lead Coaches: 5 years experience coaching youth tennis (player experience as a junior, college or adult preferred)
- Associate Coaches: 4 years of high school and/or collegiate player experience
- PTR or RSPA certified (Lead Coach)
- Strong understanding of tennis fundamentals and training techniques
- Passion for youth development and community-based programming
- Ability to work with diverse populations in dynamic environments
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be USTA Safe Play certified (or willingness to be certified by start of program)
- AED/CPR certified (or willingness to be certified by start of program)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead engaging, age-appropriate tennis sessions for youth (ages 6–12) in schools during academic semesters and in park settings during the summer
- Teach core skills including technique, footwork, and game play fundamentals
- Adapt instructions to varying skill levels, including beginner and adaptive participants
- Foster a positive, inclusive, & supportive environment that encourages participation & growth
- Support program operations, including curriculum design, setup, equipment management, and attendance tracking
- Communicate effectively with program staff, school partners, and participants
- Develop and submit reports for Head Coach to track progress of program participants
COMPENSATION:
- $75/hour - Head Coaches
- $60/hour - Associate Coaches
TIME COMMITMENT: At a minimum 4 hours a week (Saturdays: May-August), with potential for additional hours/months during the week with program expansion.
