Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideasengaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.
BAM is currently seeking friendly, polite, enthusiastic, and reliable Theater Ushers for mainstage performances during our upcoming season (September 2022 through June 2023). Theater Ushers are an integral part of the front-of-house team, helping to provide a safe, pleasant and smooth theater experience for guests attending performances in our spaces. Attention to customer care, a desire to help people, and treating guests and coworkers alike with kindness and respect are at the heart of our approach to our work.
This is a part-time, as-needed position. New hires will be added to the roster of BAMs current ushers. Schedules vary weekly depending on the performance schedules in the theaters. Weekly work is not guaranteed. All applicants must be able to work a flexible schedule including matinees, nights, weekends, and holidays. Availability for some daytime work on weekdays is a plus. This is an excellent position for those who are looking to supplement their income.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greet and welcome guests to BAM.
- Communicate performance specific policies and details
- Assist in line management, for example lines for entry or to the box office
- Assist with ticket scanning and entry protocols
- Direct and escort theater patrons to their seats and various areas within the theater (such as restrooms and exits)
- Learn and follow proper procedures for assisting guests with disabilities
- Distribute programs and other relevant materials to guests
- Ensure safety and comfort of guests/patrons by routinely monitoring assigned sections
- Maintain and ensure audience understanding/compliance with current BAM Covid protocols
- Assist in safely evacuating the audience in the event of an emergency
- Must have the ability to comply with NYC COVID-19 vaccination mandate.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- No prior experience necessary, but having worked with the public is helpful
- Excellent communication and guest service skills
- Passion for interacting with and providing an inclusive, high-quality experience for all
- Capable of working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
- Positive attitude with the ability to work as a team player
- MUST be able to work evenings and weekends. Ability to sub shifts on short notice a plus
- Any applicants under the age of 18 must obtain their Student General Employment Certificate (AT-19) and appropriate paperwork from their school indicating that they may work later than 10pm.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to climb stairs and move around the facilities as required
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds
Compensation: The salary for this position is $18.34 per hour. This position is part-time, non-exempt, and not eligible for benefits.
