Organization Overview:

The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

The Collider-Accelerator Department Injectors Group is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to the spin transport of polarized helions in the Booster Synchrotron and the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) in support of the future Electron Ion Collider. Polarized helions are new to the C-AD injector complex and will be the first new polarized species since polarized protons were introduced over 30 years ago. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Learn to operate the Booster and AGS to perform beam studies with polarized helium-3

• Perform supporting simulations in Booster and AGS

• Perform simulations of polarization transport in the EIC's Hadron Storage Ring

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• PhD in Physics or related discipline with a focus on electromagnetism

• Strong background in accelerator physics or spin dynamics

• Proficient in numerical simulations

• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative research environment

• Required to work odd hours for studies when polarized helion beams are available at the Booster and AGS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Experience operating a particle accelerator

• Functional knowledge of particle tracking code that is suitable for tracking spin such as Zgoubi, Xsuite, BMAD

• Working knowledge of a scripting language, such as python

Other Information:

• This position is for a term of two years

• This is a fully onsite position located at BNL

• Must be available after hours and/or weekends to meet project deadlines or requirements

• Hours: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

• Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment

• BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.

Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
