What are the responsibilities and job description for the Jewelry Studio Lead & Teaching Artist position at Brookfield Craft Center?
Brookfield Craft Center is seeking an experienced Jewelry Studio Lead & Teaching Artist to help us grow our Jewelry program.
Our Jewelry Studio is an established, fully equipped teaching space with significant room for expanded programming. We are looking for someone who can provide light ongoing oversight of the studio while also bringing energy, ideas, and strong teaching to our jewelry and metalsmithing offerings.
The Studio Lead commitment itself is small—approximately 15 hours per quarter—making this a good fit for a working artist or educator who wants to become part of a larger craft-school community without taking on a traditional staff position.
Beyond the Studio Lead role, there is substantial opportunity for paid teaching. We would like to significantly increase the number and variety of Jewelry classes offered at BCC, including weekend workshops, multi-week classes, introductory offerings, and more specialized techniques.
Studio Lead Responsibilities
The Jewelry Studio Lead works with the Education Director to help maintain a safe, functional, welcoming teaching studio. Responsibilities include:
- Periodically checking the Jewelry Studio and identifying equipment, tool, supply, or maintenance needs.
- Communicating studio needs and concerns to the Education Director and Facilities staff.
- Helping maintain safe and appropriate studio practices.
- Supporting organization and functionality of shared studio tools and equipment.
- Providing input on equipment, supplies, and future studio needs.
- Helping orient new Jewelry instructors to the studio, equipment, and studio-specific procedures.
- Serving as a knowledgeable resource to the Education Director as Jewelry programming grows.
The Studio Lead is not responsible for managing BCC's Education Department, scheduling classes, processing registrations, or independently managing the Jewelry program. Those responsibilities remain with BCC staff.
Teaching Opportunities
We are especially interested in finding someone who would also like to teach at BCC.
There is considerable room to expand our current Jewelry schedule, and we welcome proposals from instructors working in areas such as:
- Beginning jewelry and metalsmithing
- Soldering and fabrication
- Ring making
- Stone setting
- Chain making
- Enameling
- Casting
- Forming and forging
- Surface techniques and texture
- Cold connections
- Intermediate and advanced metalsmithing
- Short, approachable weekend workshops for beginners
Teaching opportunities are compensated separately from the Studio Lead role.
We are also interested in hearing from Jewelry instructors who may not be interested in serving as Studio Lead. If you are an experienced jewelry artist with a technique you'd love to teach, we encourage you to apply.
Who We're Looking For
The right person will have strong working knowledge of jewelry/metalsmithing processes and safe studio practices, along with the ability to work collaboratively in a shared educational studio.
Teaching experience is strongly valued, but we are equally interested in artists who have deep technical knowledge, communicate well, and are excited about becoming part of a growing craft-school community.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is excited by the opportunity to help bring more activity into the Jewelry Studio—whether through their own teaching, supporting other instructors, or helping us identify possibilities for future programming.
Schedule & Compensation
The Studio Lead role requires approximately 15 hours per quarter, scheduled flexibly in coordination with the Education Director.
Studio Lead compensation is provided separately from teaching compensation. All classes taught at Brookfield Craft Center are paid teaching opportunities.
Specific teaching schedules are flexible and developed with the Education Director based on instructor availability, student demand, and the needs of the Jewelry program.
To Apply
Please send a brief introduction outlining your jewelry/metalsmithing experience, teaching experience (if applicable), and the techniques or classes you would be interested in teaching.
Artists interested only in teaching are also encouraged to reach out.
