Description

Bronx Charter School for the Arts (Bronx Arts) is a public K-8 school founded in 2002 with campuses located in both the Hunts Point and the Soundview sections of the South Bronx. Founded on the principle that a rich and vibrant background in the arts is a key component of achieving academic excellence, the school strives to serve as a model that encourages creativity and innovation in the classroom and inspires students to develop the intellectual and personal fortitude to realize their dreams.


OPPORTUNITY SUMMARY

BRONX ARTS seeks a Multilingual Language (MLL/ENL) Teacher responsible for promoting a positive school culture. The MLL Teacher will work with the parents, students, and school leadership to ensure that the high expectations we have for our students are maintained during their sessions and use their knowledge of the development of young children, in ways in which young children learn. The MLL teacher is expected to support the social, emotional and cognitive development of young children as they strive towards language acquisition.


RESPONSIBILITIES


Coordination and Management

  • Ensure the school's compliance with all relevant laws and regulations concerning English Language Learners (ELLs), including accurate completion of necessary reports by specified deadlines, and maintaining the confidentiality of student files and records.
  • Conduct diagnostic assessments and state-mandated tests for ELLs.
  • Establish and oversee the school's process for identifying students eligible for ELL services.
  • Manage the case management system for all students qualifying for ELL services.
  • Develop and oversee the reporting system for all ELL and associated services programs.
  • Coordinate testing and assessment procedures for students eligible or potentially eligible for ELL services.
  • Provide comprehensive professional development for all staff to address the diverse instructional needs of ELL students effectively.

Teaching

  • Develop and deliver English instructions that align with state and federal educational standards.
  • Ensure instructional coherence with the school's curriculum to help students surpass learning objectives consistently with integration of the arts when appropriate.
  • Create and implement diverse lesson plans using various effective teaching methods.
  • Enhance students' communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening within the specified subject area.
  • Conduct academic and language assessments to gauge student progress towards academic goals and language proficiency.
  • Maintain accurate student records to track progress and achievements.
  • Foster a supportive learning atmosphere that promotes student accountability and integrates challenging teaching approaches.
  • Customize curriculum to provide personalized, small group, or remedial instruction tailored to individual and subgroup needs.
  • Uphold classroom discipline standards to facilitate a conducive learning environment.
  • Employ a range of teaching strategies to cater to diverse student abilities and interests.
  • Optimize instructional time for maximal student learning.
  • Supervise extracurricular activities as assigned during the school day.

Family and Community Relations

  • Communicate with parents/guardians, while remaining sensitive to and cognizant of different family cultural values and needs.
  • Initiate and maintain timely communication with all parents/guardians (through daily/weekly folders, messages and posts on Parent Square, progress reports, meeting notifications, in-person meetings) concerning student progress and to provide a clear picture of the curriculum and high expectations.
  • Work collaboratively with families and other members of the community to involve them in academic activities, to support the success of a diverse student population and to bring in volunteers and additional resources.
  • Host two mandatory ELL parent orientations (along with the Director of Student Support Services) to share the components of the program and educate parents on how their children will be supported throughout the school year.

Professionalism

  • Maintain school structure by enforcing school and class rules.
  • Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development, including an annual summer institute.
  • Accept ultimate responsibility for the progress of his or her students, and work towards actively overcoming setbacks.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and certification in ESOL teaching in New York State are mandatory.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in instructing English Language Learner (ELL) students, encompassing both teaching and supervisory roles.
  • Proficiency in federal, state, and local ELL laws, regulations, and frameworks.
  • Demonstrated success in narrowing the achievement gap among ELL students.
  • Proficiency in ELL service management systems, data management tools, organizational software, and computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Canva, Google Suite, and Outlook.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills essential for effective and professional interaction with diverse audiences.

Compensation

Salary : $60,000 - $95,000
