Pest control technicians commonly carry out different functions to ensure that a structure and the surrounding areas are free from pests, rodents, termites, etc.

His/her job also involves the identification of pests and designing effective control strategy for them. These functions are client specific and could be the same or different from one client to another, depending on the client’s needs.

He/she is responsible for the control/elimination of unwanted pests with the use of different techniques such as setting traps and spraying pesticides that will kill pests.

A pest control technician’s work entails keeping a structure free from pest, thereby maintaining the structural integrity of the building and ensuring the health and safety of occupants.

To carry out his/her role effectively, the technician must design and carry out pest management plans and be knowledgeable about the identity and biology of different kinds of pests.

As a pest control technician, you will be trained in pesticide use and safety and be expected to follow all state and federal rules and regulations.

The list below are examples of the duties, responsibilities, tasks, and functions that will be expected as a pest control technician:

  • Inspect structures and the surroundings for signs of pest infestation or pests
  • Determine the type of treatment needed to eliminate the pests
  • Take necessary measurements of the area that needs treatment
  • Estimate the cost of services rendered to clients or customers
  • Use different pest control methods such as setting of traps or baits to remove or kill pests
  • Apply pesticides safely in buildings or structures and the surrounding areas
  • Design and carry out a pest management plan
  • Drive trucks equipped with equipment needed to perform assigned jobs and properly maintain vehicle and equipment
  • Create barriers to prevent pests from entering structures and create effective pest control measures to prevent pest infestation.

Requirements – Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

To gain employment as a pest control technician, you will be expected to meet certain requirements that prove your suitability for the role.

The following are skills, qualities, abilities, experience, and educational requirements that the position of pest control technician requires:

  • Must possess physical stamina and be able to withstand harsh conditions as the nature of the job requires working on your feet for long periods of time and working in uncomfortable areas
  • Must be detailed oriented, be able to follow instructions in applying pesticide and avoid harm to the client and self
  • Must possess good customer service skills and be customer focused
  • Must possess a strong ability to keep good records, maintain customer notes, materials used, record payments collected, etc.
  • Must possess a team spirit and be able to work well in a team environment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues, and possess good interpersonal skills
  • Must have good time management skills
  • Must have good problem solving skills
  • Must be trustworthy as duties are not always in the physical presence of the client
  • Must have good organizational skills
  • Must be willing to gain knowledgeable about a wide variety of pests, and stay up to date with current industry practice
  • Must be able to pass background check
  • Must be able to receive and maintain a Texas Department of Agriculture structural pest control applicator license
  • Must have a valid drivers license and good driving history
  • Must be reliable and punctual

Requirements – Physical Abilities

  • This job requires that you be able to safely use ladders within the manufacturer’s weight limits.
  • Must be able to carry weights of at least 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to change vehicle tire.
