POSITION SUMMARY

The General Foreman directs, administers and oversees all the activities of the Mechanical Department on a local level including locomotive and freight car. Oversees the adherence to policies, goals, and operational objectives established by the General Manager and Director of Mechanical to meet customer expectations and company goals.

 

The General Foreman demonstrates and adheres to the company values of: safety, honesty, ownership, respect and teamwork to ensure successful partnerships with customers and employees that result in OmniTRAX’s continued success.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Accountable to manage the day-to-day operations of the shop/facility to achieve area goals set forth by the General Manager and Director of Mechanical

•     Oversee area budget conformance and expense regulation insuring maximum cost effectiveness while continually improving fleet reliability

•     Develop performance goals and baseline performance measurements in areas of interest to achieve or exceed quality standards as determined by upper management

  • Ensure daily locomotive power requirements are met and freight car operations are operating safely, efficiently, and within budget
  • Continually audit and monitor operational workflows, create and implement operational adjustments for continuous improvement
  • Oversee area budget: adherence to prescribed budget, organize expense regulation ensuring cost-effective practices without compromising fleet reliability
  • Promote communication and adequate information flow within the organization; remain current with the latest OEM recommendations and communicate data to subordinates as required for efficient repairs
  • Perform CDL work to meet qualifications of the FMCSA Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Subpart B: Qualification and Disqualification of Drivers and other regulations as applicable, including but not limited to, Part §391.11

   

OTHER DUTIES

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear required protective equipment such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots or safety glasses and fall protection
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Non-Exempt level associates
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to team with execution of projects; set performance goals, and provide on-going coaching of employees to achieve career objectives, cultivate a high performance culture; build a leadership pipeline throughout the organization
  • Set the example, create and lead the culture of mutual respect, cooperation and attention to detail for employees to deliver profitable execution on business goals

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 4 years Railroad Management (Mechanical and Car Repair) experience, or combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement
  • Work independently without supervision
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with high attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of 49 CFR Parts 223,224,229,231,232
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and create procedural instructions as required; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, business associates, and the general public
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and regulatory documents
  • Working knowledge of FRA, AAR, OSHA, and EPA rules and regulations specific to Locomotive
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understand mathematical concepts for cost analysis and fundamental business practices applicable to local cost effectiveness and ROI; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form with abstract and concrete variables
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; effectively communicate with all level of employees and business associates in a clear, concise, and professional manner
  • Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Valid State Driver’s License - CDL (or attain one within 90 days); pass medical certification and Drivers Qualification File, pass DOT Drug & Alcohol testing
  • D15.1 welding qualification

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil & Gas industries
  • Higher education or university program certificate

  • Class A CDL

  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather: snow, rain, heat, and sub-freezing temps; some work in climate controlled office
