About the Role

Brodeur Law Firm, LLC is seeking an associate for its post-conviction practice, which consists primarily of court-appointed habeas corpus matters, with appellate work available for qualified attorneys. You may also work on cases in other practice areas.

This role is a structured growth path, with close mentorship. You'll start with a small caseload by learning post-conviction processes and our caseload from the ground up by obtaining records, drafting petitions and motions, corresponding with clients and experts, and working directly alongside our attorneys on active cases. As you build experience, you'll take on a larger independent caseload of more significant matters, with room to grow into more complex litigation.

The firm's main office is in Middletown, CT, with a satellite office in Stonington, CT. This position offers hybrid, work-from-home flexibility after a probationary period.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Review and manage case files for court-appointed habeas corpus and post-conviction matters
  • Draft petitions, motions, and correspondence, develop investigative plans, and obtain records under attorney supervision
  • Communicate directly with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated clients, courts, the Department of Correction, prosecutors, and expert witnesses
  • Conduct legal research supporting active litigation
  • Do the quiet work that helps drive cases forward. This is core to the role, and it's how you'll learn the practice area fastest.
  • Second chair trials, and eventually serve as first chair
  • As you gain experience, independently manage a caseload of simpler matters, with the option to grow into appellate and more complex habeas litigation

Why This Role

  • Meaningful work: post-conviction and habeas corpus litigation directly affects people's liberty
  • Real mentorship: you'll work closely with an experienced supervising attorney, not be handed a large caseload on day one
  • A genuine growth path from case support to independent casework to complex litigation and appellate work
  • Hybrid flexibility and a benefits package including 401(k) with match, health insurance stipend, and flexible scheduling

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice law in Connecticut (or pending 2026 admission). Admitted preferred.
  • A genuine interest in criminal justice, post-conviction, or habeas corpus work. This matters more to us than prior litigation experience
  • Strong legal research and writing skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills and comfort with detail-heavy, process-driven casework with deadlines
  • Ability to independently prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

Final candidates will be required to pass pre-employment screening and provide an unofficial law school transcript and at least three (3) professional references.

Brodeur Law Firm, LLC is an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Employer.

Benefits

  • 401(k) with matching
  • Flexible schedule
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Health insurance stipend
