Ceramics Studio Manager

Overview

Brockway Center for Arts and Technology is currently accepting applications for the studio manager position in ceramics. The manager will work closely with one to two residents, providing an in depth teaching environment for highschoolers, adults, and the bigger community. The manager is provided with a yearly salary, health insurance, and housing, as well as full access to all studio materials and equipment. This teaching-focused position is designed for emerging or established ceramic artists seeking to spread the excitement of ceramic knowledge and enact change and development in the community.

Preferred applicants may have a MFA, BFA, or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent life experience in clay and/or teaching. The ideal candidate is someone who is excited about youth mentorship, enjoys sharing their knowledge about ceramics, and finds inspiration in the nature and community of a rural setting.

Weekly Break Down:

M-F schedule for the manager and residents. Some weekends are expected but additional time is given off when extra hours add up.

Monday-Friday, are dedicated to our after-school program. The afterschool program is our flagship program, and what we are here for as a center. This programming runs from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. each weekday and manager and residents are expected to be present and available. During the program, the resident artists, alongside the manager, work by providing demonstrations and/or working side by side with the students. It is our mission to encompass a welcoming, non-judgmental, and uplifting attitude, to create a positive outlet and safe space for our students to exist and make.

What to expect

● Ordering materials and equipment ahead of time to keep the studio operational

● Sending of and responding to emails

● Scheduling visits to local public schools to teach, demo, and promote the afterschool program

● Working with the community outreach specialist to create seasonal classes, workshops, events, and exhibitions

● Handling financial aspects including invoices, expenses, and overseeing resident payment

● Assistance with general center operations and work outside of the studio

● Creating expense reports and board report statistics

● Instructions and guidance for the resident artists

● Overseeing the firing of artwork, as well as packaging and pick up of artwork

● General studio cleaning

● Assistance with gallery maintenance

● Assisting workshops and visiting artists

● "In-school projects" with schools in the area. Normally headed by the studio manager, but residents are expected to assist.

● Various field trips to surrounding cities and or art workshops/conferences.

● College visits to surrounding programs each semester with students.

● Any workshops, travel/field trips, conferences, or things of this nature with students.

● Bailey A-400 de-airing pugmill

● spray booth

● ball mill

● clay extruder

● clay mixer

● 2 large canvas work tables

● large variety of clay tools (and means to acquire those lacking)

● photography room and necessary cameras, lights, and back drops for professional photos

● access to the Adobe Suite

● shared studio MacBook Pro

● MIGmatic M-25 welding unit

● a host of woodworking equipment ranging from miter and table saws to hand carving equipment and routers

● hardware and other various garage tools

The manager can expect to receive:

● ~$38,000 yearly salary

● Health insurance, including dental and vision

● An apartment (onsite or on Main Street). This includes rent, utilities and laundry.

● Studio supplies and expendable materials at no cost (pending scale of supplies needed).

● A solo show in our gallery

● 24-hour access to facilities and equipment.

● Cost coverage for field trips, visiting artist workshops, and any other required travel related event.

● Promotion through the website and social media network

Preferred Qualifications & Attributes:

• Well-organized and self-motivated, should have strong time-management skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Passionate about clay and knowledgeable about a range of ceramics techniques and processes. Enjoys sharing knowledge of ceramics through teaching.
• Creatively-driven and eager to develop individual artistic skills and practice. Independently-motivated and able to set/meet personal artistic goals.
• Ability to adapt to a variable schedule and remain flexible to the evolving needs and goals of a community-focused organization.
• Desire to foster community through cultivating relationships with students and community members, taking an active role in BCAT’s community outreach initiatives, and engaging with the local community.
