BROC Shelter Support Staff
Summary:
Be responsible for providing daily support to shelter residents, ensuring the safety and security of the shelter; assist with various tasks related to the shelter's operation; this might involve assisting with intake and discharge, also daily, evening, and overnight activities and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the shelter.
Schedule:
Rotating shifts of 4pm-12am or 12am-8am. Must be able to work overnights.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities-
· Build respectful, empowering relationships with shelter clients.
· Foster and maintain a healthy culture of respect, empowerment, and community where the clients can move forward towards their goals of stability.
· Coordinate client sign-in, sleeping arrangements, linen assignments, orientation, and responsibilities of the shelter, as well as shelter space and amenities.
· Conduct client intake and orientation for new clients when they arrive at the shelter.
· Monitor all client sleeping areas, bathrooms, communal areas, etc.
· Promptly deescalate any potential or actual conflict with clients.
· Complete staff logs, enter client characteristics, complete incident reports and bed night data into database.
· Oversee set up and clean-up of shelter space.
· Answer phone during shift, read and respond to phone calls, emails, or log communications.
· Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
· Adherent to policy and procedures and employee handbook
· Actively participate in all required training.
· Conduct facility walkthroughs regularly.
· Provide feedback about resident interactions and progress.
· Be initiative-taking in conflict resolution.
· Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Understanding (or commitment to develop an understanding) of the intricacies of homelessness.
· Experience, ability and willingness to work respectfully with culturally diverse people.
· Maintain boundaries, both professionally and personally.
· Ability to remain calm and help in difficult situations.
· Ability to enforce shelter rules.
· Ability to work in a setting that can be highly stressful.
· Ability to work independently and as a team.
· Ability to interact with volunteers and provide leadership.
· Have the necessary attitude, knowledge, and communication skills to deliver culturally competent services.
· Have comprehensive understanding of conflict resolution and Trauma informed practices.
Education and/or Experience:
· Minimum three years' experience in the human service field.
· High School Diploma
Computer Skills:
Experience with databases and spreadsheet software is necessary.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Clean, valid driver’s license.
Work Environment:
· Shelter-based environment with periods of high activity and interaction with individuals in crisis.
· Flexible schedule may be required, including some evenings, weekends, or holidays.
· Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
