What are the responsibilities and job description for the Help Build a New Vegetable Farm position at Broadfork Garden?
Seasonal Farm Construction Worker
June 3 – October 23 | Middleton, WI | Part-Time, Monday–Thursday
Join me in building a new vegetable farm from the ground up. I’m looking for a practical, hardworking person who enjoys physical work, construction projects, and seeing tangible progress at the end of each day.
This is less of a traditional vegetable-farming position and more of a farm-building role. We’ll be removing old infrastructure, preparing new growing areas, assembling greenhouses, and completing the many projects involved in turning a new property into a working farm.
Schedule
Wed–Thursday, approximately 5:00 AM–8:30 PM, with weekend work available too.
The exact schedule may occasionally shift depending on weather, deliveries, or the project we are working on.
What You’ll Do
- Remove fence posts, fencing, and other old farm infrastructure
- Mow, prepare, and cover growing areas with large silage tarps
- Help assemble and construct greenhouses and high tunnels
- Build fencing, pathways, work areas, and basic farm infrastructure
- Use hand tools and power tools safely
- Move lumber, materials, tarps, tools, and equipment
- Help troubleshoot projects and figure out practical solutions
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe
- Occasionally assist with other farm work as needed
About You
- You enjoy building things and working with your hands
- You are comfortable performing physical work outdoors
- You are dependable and able to work independently or alongside me
- You pay attention to measurements, details, and instructions
- You are willing to learn and comfortable asking questions
- You can regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Construction, carpentry, landscaping, farming, fencing, or equipment experience is helpful, but not required
- Experience using drills, saws, impact drivers, post pullers, or other tools is a plus
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are preferred
This position would be a particularly good fit for someone with a builder’s mindset who likes variety. One day may involve pulling fence posts, another may involve laying out a greenhouse, anchoring hoops, stretching plastic, moving materials, or preparing an entirely new growing field.
Perks
- Gain hands-on experience with greenhouses, fencing, irrigation, field preparation, and farm infrastructure
- Work outdoors on projects where you can clearly see what you accomplished
- Friendly, low-drama working environment
