Description:

Pay Range: $22 to $28 Per Hour

Britton Lumber Company has an opening for a Receiver and Operations Assistant at its Fairlee, VT warehouse and facility. This position supports the daily flow of incoming materials and outbound deliveries within a warehouse and distribution operation. This position is responsible for receiving and documenting inbound shipments while also assisting with truck dispatching, delivery scheduling, route coordination, and communication with drivers and operations staff. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This role requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to respond quickly to changing delivery and operational needs.


Receiving and Inventory Support

  • Receive incoming shipments and verify materials against purchase orders, packing slips, bills of lading, and other receiving documents.
  • Inspect incoming products for correct quantities, visible damage, quality issues, and shipping discrepancies.
  • Document shortages, overages, damaged materials, and incorrect shipments.
  • Enter receiving information accurately into the company’s enterprise software system.
  • Coordinate with purchasing, sales, accounting, warehouse, and operations staff to resolve receiving discrepancies.
  • Maintain organized receiving documents, delivery records, and supporting paperwork.
  • Assist with inventory counts, product location verification, and related inventory-control activities as needed.

Dispatch and Route Support

  • Assist with the daily dispatching of company trucks and delivery routes.
  • Help organize delivery schedules based on customer requirements, order readiness, driver availability, truck capacity, and geographic efficiency.
  • Prepare and distribute driver paperwork, delivery documents, route sheets, and special instructions.
  • Confirm that orders are complete, staged, and ready before trucks are dispatched.
  • Communicate route assignments, delivery priorities, and schedule changes to drivers and operations staff.
  • Track driver progress and delivery status throughout the day.
  • Update dispatch boards, routing systems, spreadsheets, or company software with current delivery information.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed, delayed, rescheduled, refused, or returned deliveries.
  • Help plan the following day’s routes and confirm driver, truck, and order availability.
  • Support efficient use of company vehicles by helping reduce unnecessary mileage, delays, and scheduling conflicts.

General Operations Support

  • Serve as a communication link between drivers, warehouse staff, sales personnel, customers, and operations management as needed.
  • Help prioritize work when delivery schedules, order requirements, or staffing conditions change.
  • Assist with resolving paperwork, product, inventory, and scheduling issues that could delay deliveries.
  • Monitor open orders and upcoming deliveries to identify potential problems before dispatch.
  • Assist with general administrative and operational tasks, including filing, data entry, document preparation, and record maintenance.
  • Follow company policies regarding safety, vehicle use, delivery documentation, inventory control, and customer service.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One to three years of experience in receiving, dispatching, transportation coordination, logistics, distribution, customer service, or a related role preferred.
  • Experience working with delivery drivers, route schedules, shipping documents, or warehouse operations is preferred.
  • Experience using dispatching, routing, inventory, order-management, or business software is helpful.
  • Ability to read and understand purchase orders, packing slips, delivery tickets, bills of lading, and route documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adjust quickly when schedules change.
  • Ability to remain professional and calm when handling delays, delivery problems, or competing demands.
  • Knowledge of the New England and Northern New York geographic region is helpful.

Work Environment:

This position works in both office and warehouse environments within a distribution facility. The employee will regularly communicate with drivers and operational personnel and may enter receiving, loading, warehouse, and yard areas as needed.The work environment may include noise, moving vehicles, powered equipment, changing temperatures, dust, and outdoor weather conditions. Compliance with all company safety procedures is required.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. The typical schedule is Monday-Friday 7am-4pm or 8am-5pm. Britton Lumber does not operate on weekends or select holidays.

Requirements:
  • Strong computer skills
  • Experience working with an enterprise software system such as DMSI Agility, Epicor, Netsuite, SAP, Etc..
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
